Metoclopramide is commonly used to treat vomiting caused by seasickness and acute gastroenteritis on cruise ships and serious adverse effects have not been reported from use at sea. We report severe long-lasting adverse effects in a young female seafarer following short-term, low-dose use of metoclopramide. During rough seas a 25-year-old female musician on a cruise vessel presented with nausea...

METOCLOPRAMIDE has been used in the treatment of various gastro-intestinal disorders for over a decade. Dystonic reactions to metoclopramide have been reported previously by Casteels-Van Daele et al (1970) and also Witzel (1968). The symptoms of dystonia appeared in their patients following the administration of metoclopramide in doses exceeding 0.5 mg/kg body weight for longer than a 24-hour p...

The effect of metoclopramide on presynaptic dopamine receptors was investigated in the cat cardioaccelerator nerve preparation. Metoclopramide, a substituted benzamide derivative, antagonized inhibitory action of apomorphine on positive chronotropic responses induced by sympathetic nerve stimulation in cat hearts, in vivo. Neither phentolamine, an alpha-adrenergic blocking agent, nor indomethac...

Metoclopramide, a prokinetic drug, has been documented to produce antinociceptive response in animal models through opioid pathways. Morphine has been shown to act through ATP sensitive potassium channels (KATP) to produce antinociceptive response. However, such a possibility has not been examined for metoclopramide. The present study investigated this using pharmacological tools. Acetic acid i...

AIMS Transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is an uncomfortable procedure for the majority of patients. In the current double-blind randomized prospective study, we sought to assess whether ondansetron would improve patient comfort, reduce the need for sedation, and increase tolerance during TEE, and we compared ondansetron, metoclopramide, and placebo. METHODS AND RESULTS One hundred and fi...

The synthetic vasopressin (AVP) analogue desmopressin (dDAVP) has been used as pharmacological function test to quantify vasopressinergic co-activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in the past. Such exogenous vasopressinergic stimulation may induce confounding cardiovascular, pro-coagulatory and anti-diuretic effects and low endogenous corticotrophin-releasing-hormone (CRH) ...

BACKGROUND There are different options to manage benign headache in the emergency department. The costs, side effects, and efficacies of the drugs used are significantly different. The aim of this study was to compare intravenous (IV) metoclopramide with subcutaneous (SC) sumatriptan in treatment of migraine headache. MATERIAL AND METHODS In a randomized, double-blinded clinical trial study, ...

The effects of metoclopramide on gastric emptying and gastric secretion have been assessed in man using the double sampling test meal. Metoclopramide increases the rate of emptying of the stomach. The magnitude of the effect is directly related to the initial emptying time. Metoclopramide has no effect on the acid response to a water test meal.

Previous evidence suggested that 10 mg systemic metoclopramide is not effective to prevent postoperative nausea and/or vomiting (PONV) in patients receiving general anaesthesia. However, the evidence included data with questioned validity by the author Yoshitaka Fujii. The objective of the current study was to examine the effect of a systemic dose of 10 mg metoclopramide to prevent PONV. This q...

OBJECTIVES Metoclopramide is a commonly used drug to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease in infants. Given its widespread use and growing concern about toxicity in this population, we conducted a systematic review of metoclopramide for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease in infants. METHODS We performed a systematic search of PubMed and bibliographies of relevant review article...
