The stability of eight antimicrobial agents in WILKENS-CHALGREN broth was evaluated. The activities of only carbenicillin and benzyl penicillin were significantly decreased after storage for eight weeks at--20 degrees C. Anaerobic reduction of the susceptibility testing broth prior to inoculation was found to be unnecessary.

Evidence suggests that Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria form biofilms within the airways of adults with cystic fibrosis (CF). The objective of this study was to determine whether clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa recovered from adults with CF have similar susceptibilities to individual antibiotics and to antibiotic combinations when grown as adherent monolayers or as biofilms compared to when t...

EUCAST expert rules have been developed to assist clinical microbiologists and describe actions to be taken in response to specific antimicrobial susceptibility test results. They include recommendations on reporting, such as inferring susceptibility to other agents from results with one, suppression of results that may be inappropriate, and editing of results from susceptible to intermediate o...

The fluconazole MIC distributions for Candida glabrata from testing 34 different clinical isolates and performing 51 tests on a single isolate mirrored each other. Since what is perceived as biological variation in isolates without resistance mechanisms is mainly methodological variation, breakpoints which divide this distribution not only lack a sound biological basis but also result in poor r...

Theselectionof chemotherapy inaquatic animalmedicine is not as straightforward as one might believe. A multitude of factorscan impacteffectiveness insitu. Someof these factors include the pathogen(s) present and their antimicrobial susceptibility, site(s) of infection, timing of treatment, host health/disease status, dose and regimen, water salinity, and water temperature. This article will foc...

The ability of Sensititre YeastOne to discriminate isolates with reduced caspofungin susceptibility was determined against 36 Candida spp. (6 with a known FKS1 mutation). Results were compared with those of M27-A2. The MIC endpoint was 100% growth inhibition. Overall agreement (+/-2 log2) was 87.16%. Sensititre YeastOne detected strains with reduced caspofungin susceptibility.

We have found that amphotericin B is unstable in two commonly employed fungal culture media. This instability leads to inaccuracies in determining the actual level of susceptibility of slow-growing strains that require prolonged incubation for growth. To help compensate for this problem, we have described two rapid methods of susceptibility testing.

This paper demonstrates a facile method of generating precise serial dilutions in the form of droplets on an open surface platform. The method relies on the use of surface energy traps (SETs), etched areas of high surface energy on a Teflon coated glass substrate, to assist in the magnetic manipulation of droplets to meter and dispense liquid of defined volumes for the preparation of serial dil...

Infectious diseases are a major threat to humanity, and accurate surveillance is essential. We describe how to implement a laboratory data-based surveillance system in a clinical microbiology laboratory. Two historical Microsoft Excel databases were implemented. The data were then sorted and used to execute the following 2 surveillance systems in Excel: the Bacterial real-time Laboratory-based ...

The AutoSCAN-3 (American MicroScan, Mahwah, N.J.) is an instrument capable of automated reading of commercially available microdilution trays for identification and quantitative susceptibility testing of rapidly growing bacteria. This study compared the results of visual and automated reading of microdilution trays for determination and interpretation of minimum inhibitory concentrations of 471...
