We experimentally investigated thermal nonlinear effects in a hybrid Au/SiO(2)/SU-8 plasmonic microring resonator for nonlinear switching. Large ohmic loss in the metal layer gave rise to a high rate of light-to-heat conversion in the plasmonic waveguide, causing an intensity-dependent thermo-optic shift in the microring resonance. We obtained 30 times larger resonance shift in the plasmonic mi...

Ultrafast all-optical switching is demonstrated in an oxygen-ion implanted silicon-oninsulator microring resonator. The spectral response of the device is rapidly modulated via femtosecond optical excitation and subsequent recombination of charge carriers at artificially introduced ultrafast recombination centers. At an implantation dose of 1 × 1012 cm−2 the carrier lifetime is reduced to 55 ps...

We investigate the nonlinear power transfer characteristics of a silicon photonic microring resonator. We show that the microring device behaves as a power limiter if the roll-off tail of its resonance is steeper than a simple Lorentzian lineshape. We demonstrate a three-step assay on a silicon photonic microring resonator-based detection platform that enables the quantitation of the cardiac biomarker C-reactive protein (CRP) over a dynamic range spanning six orders of magnitude. Using antibody-modified microrings, we sequentially monitor primary CRP binding, secondary recognition of bound CRP by a biotinylated antibody, and tertiary sign...

A complex-valued multi-tap tunable microwave photonic filter based on single silicon-on-insulator microring resonator is presented. The degree of tunability of the approach involving two, three and four taps is theoretical and experimentally characterized, respectively. The constraints of exploiting the optical phase transfer function of a microring resonator aiming at implementing complex-valu...

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a temporal differentiator in optical field based on a silicon microring resonator with a radius of 40 microm. The microring resonator operates near the critical coupling region, and can take the first order derivative of the optical field. It features compact size thus is suitable for integration with silicon-on-insulator (SOI) based optical and electro...

The paper presents a novel Optical Network on Chip (ONoC) relying on the multi-level optical layer design paradigm and called “OMNoC”. The proposed ONoC relies on multi-level microring resonator allowing efficient light coupling between superposed waveguides. Such microring resonator avoids using waveguide crossing, which contribute to reduce propagation losses. Preliminary experimental results...

We comprehensively analyze multiple WDM channels RZ-to-NRZ format conversion using a single microring resonator. The scheme relies on simultaneous suppression of the first order harmonic components in the spectra of all the RZ channels. An optimized silicon microring resonator with free spectral range of 100 GHz and Q value of 7900 is designed and fabricated for this purpose. Multi-channel RZ-t...

An all-optical AND logic gate in a single silicon microring resonator is experimentally demonstrated at 10 Gb/s with 50% RZ-OOK signals. By setting the wavelengths of two intensity-modulated input pumps on the resonances of the microring resonator, field-enhanced four-wave mixing with a total input power of only 8.5 dBm takes place in the ring, resulting in the generation of an idler whose inte...
