We analyze Lyα fluoresced H2 lines observed in the UV spectrum of Mira B. We identify 13 different sequences fluoresced by 13 different H2 transitions within the Lyα line. The observed H2 line ratios within these sequences imply significant line opacity, so we use a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code to model the line ratios, correcting for opacity effects. We find the observed line ratios can...

We report a result of our near-infrared repeated observations of Mira variables in the globular clusters NGC 6388 and 6441. These two clusters are known as peculiar clusters with blue horizontal branch stars and RR Lyr variables which are unexpected for their relatively high metallicities. We derive their distance moduli by fitting the Mira variables in the period-luminosity relation. This is t...

We present the first spatially resolved observations of a sample of 23 Mira stars simultaneously measured in the near-infrared J, H, and K 0 bands. The technique used was optical long-baseline interferometry, and we present for each star visibility amplitude measurements as a function of wavelength. We also present characteristic sizes at each spectral band, obtained by fitting the measured vis...

A catalogue is presented with variable (RR Lyrae, semiregular and Mira) stars located inside field #3 of the Palomar-Groningen Survey at the outer edge of the Sagittar-ius dwarf galaxy. One of the semiregular variables is a carbon star, comparable with those found by Azzopardi et al. (1991). Serendipity provides the suggestion, that their carbon stars might not be located inside, but behind the...

Monochromatic limb-darkening and monochromatic radii predicted by the non-Mira M giant models of Bessell et al. (1989a, 1991) with 3500 K ≥ Teff ≥ 2500 K were computed for selected typical bandpasses used in interferometric and lunar occultation work. Problems of defining and measuring radii of extended-photosphere stars and the relationship between different assumptions on limb-darkening and ’...

We describe the Cool Opacity-sampling Dynamic EXtended (CODEX) atmosphere models of Mira variable stars, and examine in detail the physical and numerical approximations that go in-to the model creation. The CODEX atmospheric models are obtained by computing the temperature and the chemical and radiative states of the atmospheric layers, assuming gas pressure and velocity profiles from Mira puls...

Complete samples of 2MASS stars in three fields of differing metallicities (and possibly differing age distributions) have been extracted and cross-correlated with MACHO and ISO data to determine their variability and mass-loss properties. In each MK histogram a fall-off in numbers is seen above the tip of the RGB. The luminosity of the tip increases with metallicity as does the average (J − K)...

The size of the continuum photospheres of Ori, Her, R Leo, and Cyg have been measured at 11 lm using heterodyne interferometry to accuracies as high as 1%. An assortment of narrow wavelength bands near 11 lm (each having a width 0.17 cm 1) were used to avoid spectral lines. The resulting apparent diameters for Ori and Her are 30% larger than measured near-infrared sizes, whereas the Mira variab...
