Although variationist studies of sociolinguistic performance have greatly enhanced our understanding of speakers’ use of linguistic variables and their correspondence with social and contextual factors, these works have largely overlooked the perceptual complement of the production behavior they capture. This paper reports the results of a study which uses multidimensional scaling (MDS) to mode...

We study the chemical potential of D-instantons in c = 0 noncritical string theory. In a recent work(hep-th/0405076), it was shown that the chemical potential can be calculated using the one matrix model. The calculation was done using the method of orthogonal polynomials and the authors obtained a universal value in the double scaling limit. We present an alternative method to calculate this v...

multivariate statistical techniques such as cluster analysis, multidimensional scaling and principal component analysis were applied to evaluate the temporal and spatial variations in water quality data set generated for two years (2008-2010) from six monitoring stations of veli-akkulam lake and compared with a regional reference lake vellayani of south india. seasonal variations of 14 differen...

We propose an iterated version of the Gilbert model, which results in a sequence of random mosaics of the plane. We prove that under appropriate scaling, this sequence of mosaics converges to that obtained by a classical Poisson line process with explicit cylindrical measure. Our model arises from considerations on tropical plane curves, which are zeros of random tropical polynomials in two var...

The large deviation function obtained recently by Derrida and Lebowitz for the totally asymmetric exclusion process is generalized to the partially asymmetric case in the scaling limit. The asymmetry parameter rescales the scaling variable in a simple way. The finite-size corrections to the universal scaling function and the universal cumulant ratio are also obtained to the leading order.

Experiments were conducted in which Ss made classification, recognition, and similarity judgments for 34 schematic faces. A multidimensional scaling (MDS) solution for the faces was derived on the basis of the similarity judgments. This MDS solution was then used in conjunction with an exemplar-similarity model to accurately predict Ss' classification and recognition judgments. Evidence was pro...

We prove the existence of the double scaling limit for unitary invariant ensembles of random matrices with non analytic potentials. The limiting reproducing kernel is expressed in terms of solutions of the Dirac system of differential equations with a potential defined by the Hastings-McLeod solution of the Painleve II equation. Our approach is based on the construction of the perturbation expa...

We examined how two distinct stimulus features, orientation and color, interact as contributions to global stimulus dissimilarity. Five subjects rated dissimilarity between pairs of bars (N = 30) varying in color (four cardinal hues, plus white) and orientation (six angles at 30° intervals). An exploratory analysis with individual-differences multidimensional scaling (MDS) resulted in a 5D solu...
