The failure process ahead of a mode I crack advancing in a ductile thin metal plate or sheet produces plastic dissipation through a sequence of deformation steps that include necking well ahead of the crack tip and shear localization followed by a slant fracture in the necked region somewhat closer to the tip. The objective of this paper is to analyze this sequential process to characterize the...
When a macroscopic metallic wire is subject to tensile stress, it necks down smoothly as it elongates. We show that nanowires with radii comparable to the Fermi wavelength display remarkably different behavior. Using concepts from fluid dynamics, a partial differential equation for nanowire shape evolution is derived from a semiclassical energy functional that includes electron-shell effects. A...
We investigate the transient viscoelastic behavior of weakly strain-hardening fluids in filament stretching devices during uniaxial elongation and following the cessation of stretching. The numerical results are compared with experimental observations on a concentrated shear-thinning polystyrene solution which is well characterized by a multi-mode Giesekus model. The finite element computations...
We use a Lagrangian finite element method to simulate experiments on continued and interrupted extensions of a highly entangled monodisperse polymer melt. It is demonstrated that delayed sample necking or rupture may be explained in terms of the original Doi-Edwards model augmented by the mechanism of chain stretching alone.
We investigate the transient viscoelastic response of weakly strain-hardening fluids to imposed elongational deformation in filament stretching devices. We combine timedependent finite-element simulations with quantitative experimental measurements on a rheologically well-characterized test fluid to investigate how well the device reproduces the ideal transient uniaxial extensional viscosity pr...
It follows from the Chapter 7 that, except for very short gauge lengths, percent elongation is mainly influenced by uniform elongation, and is thus dependent upon the strain-hardening capacity of the matrix. In contrast, reduction in area is more a measure of the deformation required to produce fracture, and its chief contribution arises from the necking process. The work of Groom (1971) illust...
