The case of a neonate who presented with symptoms of upper limb ischemia related to spontaneous multiple arterial and venous thromboses that were demonstrated by colour Doppler sonography and digital subtracted angiography is reported. The presentation of limb ischaemia at birth may be the warning sign of simultaneous cerebral infarction.
In neonates and infants, numerous clinical and environmental conditions lead to elevated thrombin generation and subsequent thrombus formation. Genetic prothrombotic defects (protein C, protein S and antithrombin deficiency, mutations of coagulation factor V and factor II, elevated lipoprotein (a)) have been established as risk factors of thromboembolic events in neonates and infants. The inter...
The main neonatal stroke syndromes discussed in this article are: arterial ischemic stroke (AIS), including perinatal AIS, and "presumed" perinatal AIS; cerebral venous thrombosis, including cortical vein and venous sinus thrombosis and germinal matrix hemorrhage/periventricular hemorrhagic infarction; and intraparenchymal hemorrhage. This review discusses general pathophysiological mechanisms ...
BACKGROUND Arterial thrombosis, that too in aorta is rare in neonates. CASE CHARACTERISTICS A 4-day-old presented with non-recordable BP in lower limbs. Doppler ultrasonography of abdomen revealed aortic thrombus. OBSERVATION Serum homocysteine level was elevated (25.5 umol/L). OUTCOME Thrombus resolved with subcutaneous LMW heparin therapy for 2 weeks. MESSAGE Congenital classic homocy...
Neonatal arterial thrombosis is a very rare entity with clinical findings resembling coarctation of aorta or interrupted aortic arch. A two day-old male newborn was admitted to a different hospital with difficulty in sucking and sleepiness. On echocardiographic examination, a diagnosis of interrupted aortic arch was made and he was treated with prostoglandin E2. When the patient presented to ou...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Neonatal stroke is increasingly recognized with an estimated incidence of one in 4000 live births per year. Pathways involved in the pathophysiology of neonatal stroke are diverse and may include thrombosis and thrombolysis, vascular reactivity, and inflammation. METHODS We compared frequencies of polymorphisms in genes regulating thrombosis and thrombolysis, nitric oxi...
Objective. To determine the incidence, management, complications, and outcome in neonates with thrombotic events. Study Design. We performed a retrospective study of all neonates with thrombotic events admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit from January 2004 to July 2010. Results. Thrombotic events were identified in 32 of 4734 neonates (0.7%). Seven neonates were managed expectantly and ...
