Mouse peritoneal macrophages were infected with varying numbers of Nocardia asteroides 10905, and the fate of the ingested organisms was determined by viable plate count (VPC), light microscopy (LM), immunofluorescent microscopy (IM), and electron microscopy (EM). The results obtained with these methods differed. VPC indicated that intracellular Nocardia decreased in numbers during the first 12...

DNA probes for the rapid identification of Nocardia asteroides were obtained by constructing a genomic library of strain GUH-2 in the lambda cloning vector EMBL3. Of 50 recombinant clones tested, 2 were identified that hybridized with 31% of the N. asteroides strains in a reference collection without cross-hybridization with related members of the Actinomycetales. Additional libraries were then...

In their recent report, Schlaberg et al. declare Nocardia cyriacigeorgica to be an “emerging pathogen” (3). However, no evidence is provided to support this claim. They refer to the review by Millar and Moore (2) for a definition of “an emerging pathogenic entity” but do not specify into which of the categories of emerging and reemerging pathogens distinguished by these authors they would place...

Nocardia asteroides is a rare cause of keratitis usually associated with trauma. We report a case of corneal ulceration caused by N. asteroides in a patient with leprosy. This is the first case report of nocardial keratitis from Southeast Asia. The diminished corneal sensation in a patient with leprosy could be a predisposing factor for development or exacerbation of corneal ulceration.

lateral ventricle (Figure 2). The MRI scan showed an Introduction abscess and from a biopsy N. asteroides was isolated. Twenty-four hours later the abscess was excised, treatInfection from bacteria from the Nocardia class is ment with TMP-SMX was resumed and the cyclosporin seldom found in our country. They are opportunist dose was reduced. Throughout this period the patient infections that alm...

Pulmonary nocardiosis has been described in a four-month-old male buffalo calf (Bubalus bubalis) with a history of respiratory distress lasting ten days. Microscopic examination of tissue imprints from the infected lungs revealed numerous Gram-positive, acid-fast, fine, branched, filamentous organisms which were morphologically identical with those of Nocardia spp. Cultures of pneumonic lung sp...

The aim of this multicenter study was to determine the genetic diversity and antibiotic susceptibility of clinically isolated Nocardia species. One hundred twenty-seven patients with nocardiosis were randomly selected from 5 provinces of Iran. Molecular diagnosis of Nocardia species was performed using multilocus sequence analysis of gyrase B of the β subunit of DNA topoisomerase (gyrB), and 16...

TO THE EDITOR: A previously well 57year-old man presented to the emergency department with a 3-day history of severe dyspnoea. Six weeks earlier he had noticed coryzal symptoms with subsequent lethargy, reduced appetite with weight loss, and a non-productive cough. He then developed ankle swelling and increasing abdominal girth. He had a background of excessive alcohol consumption, but had abst...

Nocardiosis is a rare but well-established opportunistic infection. We are presenting two cases of Nocardiosis diagnosed in the microbiology laboratory, one in an immuno-competent elderly patient and the other in a immunocompromised patient with AIDS. The first case was of pulmonary Nocardiosis which was caused by the Nocardia asteroides complex and concomitant infections with Staphylococcus au...

Purpose. To describe a case of postoperative scleritis caused by a novel strain of Nocardia resistant to linezolid and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX). Methods. Case report of a patient with microbiologically proven scleritis due to Nocardia asteroides. Results. The patient presented with pain, redness, and nodules on the sclera three months following pterygium excision with mitomycin C...
