This paper considers a single-machine scheduling with preventive periodic maintenance activities in remanufacturing system. Although the scheduling problem with maintenance has attracted researchers’ attention, most of past studies consider only non-preemptive jobs. In fact, there exist both preemptive and non-preemptive jobs due to their different processing technic in remanufacturing workshop...

In heterogeneous computing systems, a suite of different machines is interconnected to provide a variety of computational capabilities to execute collections of real-time application tasks that have diverse requirements. In these systems, machine failures are inevitable and can have an adverse effect on applications executing on the system. To reduce this effect, an efficient scheduling approac...

We propose a unifying framework based on configuration linear programs and randomized rounding, for different energy optimization problems in the dynamic speed-scaling setting. We apply our framework to various scheduling and routing problems in heterogeneous computing and networking environments. We first consider the energy minimization problem of scheduling a set of jobs on a set of parallel...

Due to their potential to deliver increased performance over single-core processors, multi-core processors have become mainstream in processor design. Computation-intensive real-time systems must exploit intra-task parallelism to take full advantage of multi-core processing. However, existing results in real-time scheduling of parallel tasks focus on restrictive task models such as the synchron...

In the recent years, constraint programming has been applied to a wide variety of academic and industrial non-preemptive scheduling problems, i.e., problems in which activities cannot be interrupted. In comparison, preemptive scheduling problems have received almost no attention from both the Operations Research and the Artificial Intelligence community. Motivated by the needs of a specific app...

In safety-critical applications, the use of advanced real-time scheduling techniques is significantly limited by the difficulty of finding tight estimations of worst-case execution parameters. This problem is further complicated by the use of cache memories, which reduce the predictability of the executing threads due to cache misses. In this paper, we analyze the effects of preemptions on wors...

Parallel Data processing has emerged to be one of the killer applications for Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) clouds. One of an IaaS cloud’s key feature is the provisioning of compute resources on demand. The computer resources available in the cloud are highly dynamic and possibly heterogeneous. Nephele is the first data processing framework to explicitly exploit the dynamic resource alloca...

We investigate the problem of on-line scheduling two-machine open shops with the objective of minimizing the makespan. Jobs arrive independently over time, and the existence of a job is not known until its arrival. In the clairvoyant on-line model, the processing requirement of every job becomes fully known at the arrival of the job, while in the non-clairvoyant on-line model, this processing r...

We consider scheduling on a single machine with one non-availability period to minimize the weighted sum of completion times. We provide a preemptive algorithm with an approximation ratio arbitrarily close to the Golden Ratio, (1+ √ 5)/2+ε, which improves on a previously best known 2approximation. The non-preemptive version of the same algorithm yields a (2 + ε)-approximation.

Scheduling jobs with pairwise conflicts is modeled by the graph multicoloring problem. It occurs in two versions: in the preemptive case, each vertex may get any set of colors, while in the non-preemptive case, the set of colors assigned to each vertex has to be contiguous. We study these versions of the multicoloring problem on trees, under the sum-of-completiontimes objective. In particular, ...
