In a soliton transmission system, spontaneous emission noise owing to optical amplifiers leads to timing jitter that is usually assumed to be Gaussian distributed. It is shown that the mutual interaction of solitons in neighboring time slots can lead to non-Gaussian tails on the distribution function and to a substantial increase in the bit-error rate. It is argued that the approach used here w...

A new method has been developed to measure the equivalent pore radius in cellular membranes, and has been applied to human red cells. When red cells are suddenly introduced into a non-isosmolar concentration of non-lipid-soluble non-electrolyte molecules, water will enter or leave the cell. The rate of cell swelling or shrinking is determined and extrapolated to zero time to give the initial ra...

Finite affine groups are given by groups of translations and di- lations on finite cyclic groups. For cyclic groups of prime order we develop a time-scale (wavelet) analysis and show that for a large class of non-zero window signals/vectors, the generated full cyclic wavelet system constitutes a frame whose canonical dual is a cyclic wavelet frame.

background: lead-based radiation shields are widely used in radiology departments to protect both workers and patients from any unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation. recently there has been a great deal of concern expressed about the toxicity of lead. human lead toxicity is well documented. in that light, production of environmentally-friendly lead-free radiation shields with less weight ...

We study the time evolution of the quantum fluctuations of the axion field for both the QCD axion as well as axions arising in the context of supergravity and string theories. We explicitly keep track not only of the coherently oscillating zero momentum mode of the axion but also of the higher non-zero momentum modes using the full axion potential. The full axion potential makes possible two ki...

In this paper we address the general multi-period production/inventory problem with non-stationary stochastic demand and supplier lead time under service-level constraints. A replenishment cycle policy (Rn,Sn) is modeled, where Rn is the n-th replenishment cycle length and Sn is the respective order-up-to-level. Initially we extend an existing formulation for this policy in a way to incorporate...

We propose an alternative way of looking at data on anomalous J/ψ suppression. The proposed method is in principle equivalent to the one used by the NA50 Collaboration, but it permits to visualize separate contributions of individual processes responsible for the disintegration of J/ψ's produced by a hard process in nuclear collisions. The method can be used provided that the time sequence of c...
