Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) incidence is increasing, particularly in young people, and can be associated with significant morbidity and treatment costs. To identify young individuals at risk of BCC, we assessed existing melanoma or overall skin cancer risk prediction models and built a novel risk prediction model, with a focus on indoor tanning and the melanocortin 1 receptor gene, MC1R. We eval...

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (diabetes) is more prevalent among African Americans (AAs) compared to nonHispanic whites (NHWs). Recent trends indicate that diabetes incidence has plateaued among NHWs, but continues to rise among AAs. Thus, examining potential diabetes prevention strategies in AA populations is of paramount importance. The two strategies that will be explored are modifiable lifestyle...

BACKGROUND Young adult Mexican Americans (MA) exhibit lower insulin sensitivity (Si) than nonHispanic whites (NHW), even when controlling for fitness and adiposity. It is unclear if MA are as responsive to the same lifestyle intervention as NHW. OBJECTIVE We developed a model to examine cardiometabolic plasticity (i.e., changes in Si and plasma lipids) in MA compared to NHW adults in response...

Genetic variants in genes controlling cellular processes such as cell cycle, DNA repair, and apoptosis may modulate lung cancer risk. p73 has some p53-like activity and plays an important role in modulating these processes. The noncoding region of exon 2 of the p73 gene has two polymorphisms that are in complete linkage disequilibrium with one another, which may alter translation efficiency of ...
