We have developed an imaging method for locating isolated nonlinear scattering source~s! in solids. It relies on extracting the nonlinear response of a solid by modulation of a high by a low-frequency wave, and employing moving-window, synchronous detection. The resulting image consists of nonlinear wave reflection profiles with remarkable sensitivity to an isolated elastic nonlinear source~s!....

When light travels in a optical fiber, a fraction of its total power is always scattered to other wavelengths (or polarization) due to material non linearity. Whether that scattering is weak or strong, desirable or not, depends on the situation. One distinguishes (i) scattering stimulated by the presence of a seed wave (at another wavelength or polarization), (ii) spontaneous scattering, and (i...

We report angle-resolved second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements from suspensions of centrosymmetric micron-size polystyrene spheres with surface-adsorbed dye (malachite green). The second-harmonic scattering profiles differ qualitatively from linear light scattering profiles of the same particles. We investigated these radiation patterns using several polarization configurations and part...

We study the scattering of linear and nonlinear waves in a long waveguide array with a parity-time (PT )symmetric defect created by two waveguides with balanced gain and loss. We present exact solutions for the scattering of linear waves on such a defect, and then demonstrate numerically that the linear theory can describe, with a good accuracy, the soliton scattering in the case of weak nonlin...

We study in detail the strong-field QED process of non-linear Compton scattering in short intense plane wave laser pulses of circular polarization. Our main focus is placed on how the spectrum of the back-scattered laser light depends on the shape and duration of the initial short intense pulse. Although this pulse shape dependence is very complicated and highly non-linear, and has never been a...

Attributed scattering feature models have shown potential in aiding automatic target recognition and scene visualization from radar scattering measurements. Attributed scattering features capture physical scattering geometry, including the non-isotropic response of target scattering over wide angles, that is not discerned from traditional point scatter models. In this paper, we study the identi...

We propose an Inverse Compton Scattering (ICS) experiment, which will investigate nonlinear properties of the scattering utilizing the terawatt CO2 laser system with various polarizations in Neptune Laboratory at UCLA. When the normalized amplitude of the vector potential a0 is larger than unity the scattering occurs in the nonlinear region; therefore, higher harmonics are also produced. We pre...

We introduce a new concept of the nonlinear control of invisibility cloaking. We study the scattering properties of multi-shell plasmonic nanoparticles with a nonlinear response of one of the shells, and demonstrate that the scattering cross-section of such particles can be controlled by a power of the incident electromagnetic radiation. More specifically, we can either increase or decrease the...

We study resonant light scattering in arrays of channel optical waveguides in which tunable quadratic non-linearity is introduced as nonlinear defects by periodic poling of single (or several) waveguides in the array. We describe novel features of wave scattering that can be observed in this structure and show that it is a good candidate for observation of Fano resonance in nonlinear optics.

The scattering of ultrasound from bubbles of ∼ 1 μm radius, such as used in contrast enhancers for ultrasound diagnostics, is studied. We show that sound scattering and “active” emission of sound from oscillating bubbles are not contradictory, but are just two different aspects derived from the same physics. Treating the bubble as a nonlinear oscillator, we arrive at general formulas for scatte...
