Olfaction is one of our 5 main qualitative sensory abilities. In this review, we have examined the physiology of olfaction from the olfactory receptor to the brain. Through analyzing the physiology of olfaction, we have found that the biochemistry of olfactory nerve stimulation is unique from that of other similar pathways. Upon receiving large amounts of input from the olfactory nerve, the olf...

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is known for its motor alterations, but the importance of non-motor symptoms (NMSs), such as olfactory dysfunction (OD), increasingly recognized. OD may manifest during prodromal period disease, even before appear. Therefore, it suggested that this symptom could be considered a marker PD. This article briefly describes PD, evolution knowledge about in prevalence NMS and...

The philosophy of perception has been mostly focused on vision, to the detriment of other modalities like audition or olfaction. In this paper I focus on olfaction and olfactory experience, and raise the following questions: is olfaction a perceptual-representational modality? If so, what does it represent? My goal in the paper is, firstly, to provide an affirmative answer to the first question...

Taste and smell disorders have multiple causes. We describe a patient in whom atrial fibrillation and subsequent embolic stroke was discovered because of complaints of decreased smell and taste. These deficits ultimately improved after treatment of the atrial fibrillation along with anticoagulation medication for stroke prevention.

Introduction Olfactory loss in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis has been measured by different methods. However, the results have been variable, and it is not clear whether endoscopic sinus surgery significantly improves olfactory function. This study was performed to evaluate the influence of endoscopic sinus surgery on olfactory function in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis. Material...

The past 15 years have seen significant advances in the study of olfaction, with particular emphasis on elucidating the molecular building blocks of the sensory process. However, much of the systems-level organization of olfaction remains unexplored. Here, we provide an overview at this level, highlighting results obtained from studying humans, whom we think provide an underutilized, yet critic...

BACKGROUND We evaluated smell identification as a biomarker for Alzheimer disease (AD) by assessing its utility in differentiating normal aging from an amnestic disorder and determining its predictive value for conversion from amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) to AD. METHODS Cross-sectional study (AD = 262, aMCI = 110, controls = 194) measuring smell identification (University of Penn...

High cervical spinal cord injuries induce extreme handicap and tactile isolation. Tracheotomised tetraplegic patients are also bound to be olfaction deprived. By restoring negative pressure inspiration, diaphragm pacing (DP) should improve olfaction. We tested olfaction in 10 consecutive tetraplegics during positive pressure mechanical ventilation and DP, using the University of Pennsylvania Sm...
