We have cloned and sequenced a 1.5-kb chromosomal fragment of Thermus thermophilus which promoted the overproduction of carotenoids in T. thermophilus. An open reading frame (ORF-A) coding for a polypeptide with 289 amino acids was responsible for carotenoid overproduction. The putative ORF-A protein showed significant homology with the amino acid sequences of crtB gene products (phytoene synth...

Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is the causative agent of three malignancies associated with AIDS and immunosuppression. Tumor cells harbor latent virus and express kaposin (open reading frame [ORF] K12), v-FLIP (ORF 71), v-Cyclin (ORF 72), and latency-associated nuclear antigen (LANA; ORF 73). ORFs 71 to 73 are transcribed as multicistronic RNAs initiating from adjacent constitu...

Complementary DNA clones representing approximately 6100 nucleotides of potato leafroll virus (PLRV) were generated, restriction-mapped, and partially sequenced. Within one of the cDNA clones an open reading frame (ORF) encoding a 23K protein was identified and further characterized. Amino acid sequence comparison of this protein showed significant homology (47.1%) with the barley yellow dwarf ...

in this study, the full-length m2 gene of the avian influenza virus (h9n2) was isolated, analyzed and studied in detail. total rna was extracted and cdna of the m2 mrna was obtained by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (rt-pcr) using random hexamer oligoes; specific primers were used for amplification of the m2 open reading frame (orf) region. pcr was able to amplify the desirable...

Transient expression assays have shown that the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) open-reading frame (ORF) 29 gene product can act as a modulator of VZV gene expression. The ORF 29 protein alone does not appear to have any effect on transcription; however, in its presence, changes in the level of reporter gene activity mediated by the VZV immediate early (IE) 62 major transactivator are seen. Increa...

Endornaviruses have large double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) genomes that carry a single open reading frame (ORF). Here we report the complete genome of a novel endornavirus, assembled from next-generation sequence data generated from Vitis vinifera-extracted dsRNA. Two different fungal hosts have been identified for this virus, suggesting that horizontal transmission of the virus is possible.

We compared PCR amplification of 9 enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli virulence factors among 40 isolates (21 O/H antigenicity classes) with DNA hybridization. Both methods showed 100% of the chromosomal and phage genes: eae, stx, and stx2. PCR did not detect 4%-20% of hybridizable plasmid genes: hlyA, katP, espP, toxB, open reading frame (ORF) 1, and ORF2.

Presented here is a draft genome sequence for Staphylococcus agnetis CBMRN 20813338, isolated from a lactating dairy cow with subclinical mastitis. The genome is approximately 2,416 kb and has 35.79% G+C content. Analysis of the deduced open reading frame (ORF) set identified candidate virulence attributes in addition to potential molecular targets for species identification.

We report the draft genome sequence of goose dicistrovirus assembled from the filtered feces of a Canadian goose from South Lake Union in Seattle, Washington. The 9.1-kb dicistronic RNA virus falls within the family Dicistroviridae; however, it shares <33% translated amino acid sequence within the nonstructural open reading frame (ORF) from aparavirus or cripavirus.
