Currently, we are developing a computational optical biopsy technology for molecular sensing. We use the diffusion equation to model photon propagation but have a concern about the accuracy of diffusion approximation when the optical sensor is close to a bioluminescent source. We derive formulas to describe photon fluence for point and ball sources and measurement formulas for an idealized opti...
Monte Carlo approaches to radiation transport have several attractive properties compared to deterministic methods. These include simplicity of implementation, high accuracy, and good parallel scaling. Moreover, Monte Carlo methods can handle complicated geometries and are relatively easy to extend to multiple spatial dimensions, which makes them particularly interesting in modeling complex mul...
We demonstrate the ballistic transport of electron spin in the absence of net transport of electron charge. Spin-up electrons move in one direction, while an equal number of spin-down electrons move with the same velocities in the opposite direction, yielding no net charge motion. This effect, also referred to as a ‘pure’ spin current, results from the quantum mechanical interference of the tra...
Two-photon spectroscopy of atomic cesium confined and cooled in a magneto-optical trap is reported. The hyperfine structure of the 6D(5/2) state is determined with 1% accuracy. New capabilities for studying ac Stark shifts and kinetic transport for cold atoms are suggested.
The Low Density Matter (LDM) beamline has been built as part of the FERMI free-electron laser (FEL) facility to serve the atomic, molecular and cluster physics community. After the commissioning phase, it received the first external users at the end of 2012. The design and characterization of the LDM photon transport system is described, detailing the optical components of the beamline.
The use of perturbation and differential Monte Carlo (pMC/dMC) methods in conjunction with nonlinear optimization algorithms were proposed recently as a means to solve inverse photon migration problems in regionwise heterogeneous turbid media. We demonstrate the application of pMC/dMC methods for the recovery of optical properties in a two-layer extended epithelial tissue model from experimenta...
We theoretically study the transmission of few-photon quantum fields through a strongly nonlinear optical medium. We develop a general approach to investigate nonequilibrium quantum transport of bosonic fields through a finite-size nonlinear medium and apply it to a recently demonstrated experimental system where cold atoms are loaded in a hollow-core optical fiber. We show that when the intera...
Abstract Propagation of light by Anderson localization has been demonstrated in micro-nano-structured fibers. In this work, we introduce a phase separated glass optical fiber for quantum applications. By using spontaneous parametric down-conversion source, multi-photon detection with single-photon avalanche diode array camera, and signal post-processing techniques, demonstrate transport, where ...
