Bacillus subtilis is currently used as an oral probiotic. We examined two commercial B. subtilis probiotic preparations, Enterogermina and Biosubtyl. Surprisingly, physiological and genetic characterization of the bacteria contained in each of these preparations has shown that neither contains B. subtilis.

Background: We and others have reported the prophylactic efficacy of oral consumption of probiotic lactobacilli in the interleukin 10 knockout (IL-10 KO) model of colitis. It has not been demonstrated that the oral route is essential for probiotic efficacy. Aims: (i) To determine the effect of parenteral administration (subcutaneous) of Lactobacillus salivarius 118 on colitis of IL-10 KO mice; ...

Background. The authors of this article noted that oral stomatitis, caused by overgrowth of Candida yeast organisms, may be associated with antibiotic use, hyposalivation, an impaired immune system, poor oral hygiene, and smoking. Moreover, frail elderly people having dentures, xerostomia, and impaired oral hygiene often experience recurrent and chronic Candidaassociated stomatitis. The purpose...

Background and Aim: Candida albicans has numerous virulence factors such as the agglutinin-like sequence(ALS) genes which code the large glycoprotein family that has a role in the adherence of Candida. The present study was to observe the synergistic effect of ketoconazole and probiotic composition of Bifidobacterium bifidum on expression of C. albicans als gene biofilm isolated from oral sampl...

The prevalence of dental caries continues to increase, and novel strategies to reverse this trend appear necessary. The probiotic Streptococcus salivarius strain M18 offers the potential to confer oral health benefits as it produces bacteriocins targeting the important cariogenic species Streptococcus mutans, as well as the enzymes dextranase and urease, which could help reduce dental plaque ac...

Rotaviruses (RVs) are a leading cause of childhood diarrhea. Current oral vaccines are not effective in impoverished countries where the vaccine is needed most. Therefore, alternative affordable strategies are urgently needed. Probiotics can alleviate diarrhea in children and enhance specific systemic and mucosal Ab responses, but the T cell responses are undefined. In this study, we elucidated...

Imbalance in the resident microbiota may promote the growth of opportunistic microorganisms, such as yeasts of Candida genus and the development of diseases, especially in aged people. This study evaluated whether the consumption of the probiotic Yakult LBz(®) (Lactobacillus casei and Bifidobacterium breve) was able to influence on the specific immunological response against Candida and on the ...

Background and Objectives: Candida species is one of the commensal microorganisms and a member of the oral cavity normal flora. In addition, Candida albicans is a microbiologic member of the oral cavity in children with dental caries. Currently, use of probiotics as a new biologic technique has attracted attention in order to prevent and control diseases. Enterococcus durans has shown useful an...
