The aim of the present study was to determine whether the radical reaction intermediates--reactive oxygen species (ROS) were formed during the laccase-catalyzed oxidation of wood fibers from Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) and to quantify tentatively its production with electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometry. To investigate the activation pathways triggered by laccase, ESR spin-trappi...

1. The oxidation of butyrate, hexanoate and octanoate by rat-liver mitochondria suspended in a tris-potassium chloride medium in the presence of malate and serum albumin has been investigated. 2. The oxidation of butyrate to acetoacetate was markedly decreased by the addition of a system competitive for ATP (hexokinase-glucose). 3. Serum albumin or tricarboxylic acid-cycle intermediates prevent...

In preceding communications from this laboratory (1,2) on the activation of fatty acid oxidation by adenosinc t,riphosphate, a working hypothesis on the nature of this activation was elaborated. This hypothesis suggested the possible intermediate formation of carboxyl phosphates of the fatty acids to account, for the necessity of adenosine triphosphate in fatty acid oxidation. The subject] of t...

Understanding how the four-electron oxidation of water to dioxygen proceeds in different materials is critical to the rational design of efficient catalysts towards artificial photosynthetic systems. Here, using in situ electrochemical evanescent wave spectroscopy under oxygen-evolving conditions, we report two intermediates of iridium oxide (IrOx), which is the most active and stable catalyst ...

Cyclohexane oxidation is an important commercial reaction for the preparation of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone, which are intermediates in the production of adipic acid and caprolactam respectively. These intermediates are important in the manufacture of nylon-6 and nylon-6,6 polymers (Yuan et al 2006 and Shylesh et al 2007). In addition, cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone are also used as solvent...

Photocatalytic oxidation of organic compounds proceeded efficiently in a hybrid system with ruthenium aqua complexes as catalysts, BiVO4 as a light absorber, [Co(NH3)5Cl](2+) as a sacrificial electron acceptor and water as an oxygen source. The photogenerated holes in the semiconductor are used to oxidize molecular catalysts into the high-valent Ru(IV)=O intermediates for 2e(-) oxidation.

The present work highlights recent advances in elucidating the methane oxidation mechanism of inorganic Cu-ZSM-5 biomimic and in identifying the reactive intermediates that are involved. Such molecular understanding is important in view of upgrading abundantly available methane, but also to comprehend the working mechanism of genuine Cu-containing oxidation enzymes.
