Sorghum and pearl millet are two important dry land crops that provide grain and fodder. India is the largest pearl millet producer and second largest producer of sorghum in the world. The productivity of these crops has been low due to various reasons such as unavailability of quality inputs to the farmers, lack of access to improved technologies for crop production, unavailability of credit o...

Many soils are contaminated by heavy metals, with arsenic posing serious environmental threat. Enrichment of soil with phosphate is believed to reduce the arsenic toxicity. However, only a few attempts have already been conducted towards understanding the precise role of phosphate in controlling As toxicity. Moreover, there is no adequate information on the effect of phosphate on As-induced...

Simulations of gastro-intestinal digestion, used to estimate in vitro iron and zinc availability, were performed on two kinds of samples: (i) samples with decreased phytate contents from whole pearl millet flour and (ii) nondephytinized or dephytinized samples from two pearl millet grain fractions, a decorticated fraction with low fiber and tannin contents and a bran fraction with high fiber an...

BACKGROUND Pearl millet landraces display an important variation in their cycle duration. This diversity contributes to the stability of crop production in the Sahel despite inter-annual rainfall fluctuation. Conservation of phenological diversity is important for the future of pearl millet improvement and sustainable use. Identification of genes contributing to flowering time variation is ther...

The DNA content of bundle sheath cells and mesophyll protoplasts from the C(4) plant pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum, Tift 23DB) was determined by microspectrophotometry to be 1.8 to 2.3 and 3.2 to 4.0 picograms/nucleus, respectively. Measurement of RNA by ultraviolet spectroscopy indicated that bundle sheath cells contain twice as much RNA as mesophyll cells.

Millet is a cereal of enormous importance with potentials in the agricultural systems and food security but it constitutes a neglected agrobiodiversity. Soil borne pathogenic fungi could be possible culprit to millet cultivation in southwestern Nigeria. Therefore, this study investigates the pathogenic effect of isolated Fusarium species from soil on millet seedlings under greenhouse conditions...

About 26% of the Indian population is deficient in calories and 28% in protein (Chand et al. 2003). The deficiency is most acute among the poor. The magnitude of micronutrient [iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn)] deficit is particularly alarming among children, women of reproductive age, and pregnant and lactating women (Sharma 2003). Current efforts to combat micronutrient malnutrition in the developing ...

In this paper, we describe the thought process and initial data behind the development of an imaging platform (LeasyScan) combined with lysimetric capacity, to assess canopy traits affecting water use (leaf area, leaf area index, transpiration). LeasyScan is based on a novel 3D scanning technique to capture leaf area development continuously, a scanner-to-plant concept to increase imaging throu...

Pearl millet plays an important role for food security in arid regions of Africa and India. Nevertheless, it is considered an orphan crop as it lags far behind other cereals in terms of genetic improvement efforts. Breeding pearl millet varieties with improved root traits promises to deliver benefits in water and nutrient acquisition. Here, we characterize early pearl millet root system develop...

Pearl millet is a staple food crop for millions of people living in the arid and semi-arid tropics. Molecular markers have been used to identify genomic regions linked to traits of interest by conventional QTL mapping and association analysis. Phenotypic recurrent selection is known to increase frequencies of favorable alleles and decrease those unfavorable for the traits under selection. This ...
