Small-scale purification of plasmid DNA is commonly used in molecular biology procedures. Several protocols for rapid isolation of DNA have previously been published (1,2). Several companies have also developed reliable miniprep kits that have become the method of choice for most laboratories when preparing plasmid DNA. However, even when using a kit, these miniprep processes can be laborious a...

american foulbrood (afb) is the most serious brood disease of the honey bee. traditional methods are reliable but rather slow simply because they are based on biochemical, morphological and physiological identification of cultivated isolates. the aim of this study is the detection of paenibacillus larvae larvae spores in honey and diseased larvae samples by culture and pcr. therefore 54 samp...

INTRODUCTION Microbiology laboratories must provide accurate blood culture reports with rapid turnaround time (TAT) to effectively manage patients with sepsis. In this study three methods are compared for reporting blood culture results: a manual method that included use of a serum separator tube (SST), the conventional manual, and an automated method for identification and susceptibility (ID/A...

TAK-778 [(2R,4S)-(-)-N-(4-diethoxyphosphorylmethylphenyl)-1,2,4, 5-tetrahydro-4-methyl-7, 8-methylenedioxy-5-oxo-3-benzothiepin-2-carboxyamide; mw 505.53], a novel osteoblast differentiation promoting compound, was characterized in vitro and in vivo models. TAK-778 at doses of 10(-6) M and higher promoted potently bone-like nodule formation in the presence of dexamethasone in rat bone marrow st...

Bacterial pellets from Enterobacteriaceae positive blood cultures prepared using ammonium chloride were tested for rapid detection of β-lactamase using the commercial βLACTA test and read after 30 minutes. During 7 months, 137 bacterial pellets were tested prospectively. βLACTA test exhibited a sensitivity of 75% and a specificity of 100% for the detection of third-generation cephalosporin resi...

Image analysis technique was applied to identify morphological changes of pellets from white-rot fungus Trametes versicolor on agitated submerged cultures during the production of exopolysaccharide (EPS) or ligninolytic enzymes. Batch tests with four different experimental conditions were carried out. Two different culture media were used, namely yeast medium or Trametes defined medium and the ...

The penicillin binding protein 2a (PBP2a) latex agglutination test using a blood culture pellet was compared to the oxacillin screen agar method using isolated colonies. For blood cultures positive for Staphylococcus aureus (n = 70), the direct PBP2a test was 18% sensitive and 100% specific. The PBP2a test shows poor sensitivity when used directly with positive blood cultures.
