Ocular regional anesthesia can be accomplished with either a peribulbar or retrobulbar approach. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Complications can be vision-threatening or life-threatening. Positioning the eye in neutral gaze when retrobulbar block is executed and using a needle no longer than 31 mm are effective strategies to reduce the incidence of serious complications.
In a single-centre, randomized, double-blind study, we compared the efficacy of 2% articaine with that of a mixture of 0.5% bupivacaine and 2% lidocaine for peribulbar anaesthesia in cataract surgery, using a single medial canthus injection technique. Eighty-two patients were allocated randomly to receive 7-9 ml of a mixture of 0.5% bupivacaine and 2% lidocaine or an equal volume of 2% articain...
PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy and safety of intracameral mydriatic solution, as compared to preoperative topical mydriatics, in patients undergoing manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS) under peribulbar anesthesia. To assess the sustainability of intracameral mydriasis in MSICS by monitoring pupil size at specific junctures during the surgery. METHODS Th...
The studybySoares et al. 1 published in this edition of the Brazilian Journal of Anesthesiology has aroused old questions about anesthetic techniques for eye surgery: retrobulbar, peribulbar, extraconal, periconal and subtenonian Anesthetic techniques aim at depositing local anesthetics in a given point as from which spread may reach ciliary nerves responsible for eye sensitivity, ciliary gangl...
