X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) are promising tools for structural determination of macromolecules via coherent x-ray scattering. During ultrashort and ultraintense x-ray pulses with an atomic-scale wavelength, samples are subject to radiation damage and possibly become highly ionized, which may influence the quality of x-ray scattering patterns. We develop a toolkit to treat detailed ionizat...

The nonlinear absorption mechanisms of neon atoms to intense, femtosecond kilovolt x rays are investigated. The production of Ne(9+) is observed at x-ray frequencies below the Ne(8+), 1s(2) absorption edge and demonstrates a clear quadratic dependence on fluence. Theoretical analysis shows that the production is a combination of the two-photon ionization of Ne(8+) ground state and a high-order ...

For a GaAs filled metallic hole array on a pre-epi GaAs substrate, the free carriers, generated by three-photon absorption (3PA) assisted by strongly enhanced local fields, reduce the refractive index of GaAs in ~200-nm thick active area through band filling and free carrier absorption. Therefore, the surface plasma wave (SPW) resonance, and the related second harmonic (SH) spectrum blue shifts...

Photographic film has commonly been exposed by a single-photon absorption mechanism. We determine the conditions for film exposure by direct two-photon absorption. Using subpicosecond laser pulses, we find that two-photon exposure for commercial film has a threshold fluence and an intensity of 0.0008 J/cm2 and 0.0066 TW/cm2, respectively, well below the optical damage threshold. Multiphoton pho...

Photon propagation in biological tissue is commonly described by the radiative transfer equation, while the phase function in the equation represents the scattering characteristics of the medium and has significant influence on the precision of solution and the efficiency of computation. In this work, we present a generalized Delta-Eddington phase function to simplify the radiative transfer equ...

The aim in this study is to develop a generalized strategy for 3D dose verification of IMRT and VMAT planes using EPID transit images in combination with Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. An EPID-based dosimetric verification procedure was developed to convert EPID-measured transit images into 2D exit photon fluence by de-convoluting with the MC-simulated EPID response kernels. The present scatter ...

The light receptor and its mode of operation were studied in photosensitive oospores of Nitella furcata subsp. megacarpa (Allen emend. Wood). Brief pulses of light activated maximal germination of post-secondary dormant oospores removed from lake sediments. Fluence response data at 12 wavelengths were used to construct an action spectrum for germination. The shape of the action spectrum with it...

The main approach to smooth Pareto surface navigation for radiation therapy multi-criteria treatment planning involves taking real-time averages of pre-computed treatment plans. In fluencebased treatment planning, fluence maps themselves can be averaged, which leads to the dose distributions being averaged due to the linear relationship between fluence and dose. This works for fluence-based pho...

Treatment verification has been a weak link in external beam radiation therapy. As new and more complicated treatment techniques, such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), are implemented into clinical practice, verifying the accuracy of treatment delivery becomes increasingly important. Existing methods for treatment verification are highly labor intensive. We have developed a meth...
