Heat waves are expected to increase in duration and frequency, impacting coastal ecosystems, especially intertidal organisms living near their thermal tolerance limits. Sedentary infaunal species limited some extent escapes from sudden temperature changes, rather modifications physiology behaviour expected. This may lead strong ecological economic impacts on commercial bivalve species, such as ...

We present here the draft genome sequences for nine strains of Vibrio (V. cyclitrophicus, V. splendidus, V. tasmaniensis, and three unidentified) and one Shewanella strain. Strains were isolated from red (Haliotis rufescens) and white (Haliotis sorenseni) abalone, with and without exposure to "Candidatus Xenohaliotis californiensis," the causative agent of abalone withering syndrome.

Abalone sperm use lysin to make a hole in the egg's protective vitelline envelope (VE). When released from sperm, lysin first binds to the VE receptor for lysin (VERL) then dissolves the VE by a non-enzymatic mechanism. The structures of the monomeric and dimeric forms of Haliotis rufescens (red abalone) lysin, previously solved at 1.90 and 2.75 A, respectively, have now been refined to 1.35 an...

Red and brown seaweeds are natural foods for Haliotis discus hannai, an abalone species with dark-brown shells that is also known as Ezo. This preliminary study investigated the effect of seaweed on the color and quality of the meat and shells of this abalone. Results showed that a formulated test diet and an established commercial feed individually resulted in lower growth rates and meat prote...

Population consequences of endangered species interacting as predators and prey have been considered theoretically and legally, but rarely investigated in the field. We examined relationships between spatially variable populations of a predator, the California sea otter, Enhydra lutris nereis, and a prey species, the black abalone, Haliotis cracherodii. Both species are federally listed under t...
