background extended-spectrum β-lactamase (esbl) production is the major resistance mechanism to β-lactam antibiotics in enterobacteriaceae. in addition, emergence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (pmqr) in esbl-producing isolates has become a global threat for treatment of these infections. objectives we investigated the association between esbl production and quinolone resistance in ur...

Although resistance to quinolones is commonly chromosomally-encoded in Enterobacteriaceae, the emergence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) has also been reported, with at least three known resistance mechanisms to date, i.e., Qnr, aminoglycoside acetyltransferase AAC(6')-Ib-cr and QepA. Qnr proteins protect target enzymes (DNA gyrase and type IV topoisomerase) from quinolone inhib...

The growing frequency of antibiotic resistances is now a universal problem. Increasing resistance to new generations of β-lactam and quinolone antibiotics in multidrug-resistant Enterobacteriaceae isolates is considered an emergency health issue worldwide. The aim of this study was to evaluate plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes in ESBL-producing Escherichia coli isolated from urinary t...

We determined the prevalence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance mechanisms among non-Typhi Salmonella spp. isolated from humans, food animals, and retail meat in the United States in 2007. Six isolates collected from humans harbored aac(6')Ib-cr or a qnr gene. Most prevalent was qnrS1. No animal or retail meat isolates harbored a plasmid-mediated mechanism.

OBJECTIVES Nalidixic acid-resistant Salmonella enterica serovars Kentucky (n = 5) and Virchow (n = 6) cultured from individuals were investigated for the presence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) determinants. METHODS PMQR markers and mutations within the quinolone resistance-determining regions of the target genes were investigated by PCR followed by DNA sequencing. Conjugatio...

Although quinolone resistance commonly results from chromosomal mutation, recent studies indicate that such resistance can also be transferred on plasmids carrying the gene responsible, qnr. One hundred ten ciprofloxacin-resistant clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli from the United States were screened for the qnr gene by PCR and Southern hybridization of plasmid DNA...

Background: Quinolone resistant Salmonella serotypes have been reported in recent years and become increasingly widespread worldwide. Objectives: We evaluated the molecular mechanism of quinolone resistance non-typhoidal strains isolated from clinical samples Tehran, Iran. Methods: The present study included isolates originated hospitalized individuals outpatients Serotyping nalidixic acid-resi...

additive effect on quinolone susceptibility.7 Though Qnr proteins and Aac(60)-Ib-cr only induce low level quinolone resistance, they are known to facilitate selection of resistancemutations in the presence of concentrations of quinolone antibiotics.8 We describe an isolate of K. pneumoniae isolate carrying three plasmid-mediated quinolone-resistant genes (qnrB, qnrS and aac (60)-Ib-cr variant) ...
