Opportunistic infections in endogenous Cushing's syndrome are associated with severe cortisol excess and carry a high mortality. Pulmonary cryptococcosis is one of these opportunistic infections and can mimic a lung neoplasm, therefore making its diagnosis difficult. We report a case of a young male with ACTH-dependent Cushing's syndrome and severe hypercortisolism. The patient achieved cure af...
Uterine leiomyosarcoma (ULC) is an uncommon neoplasm characterized by poor prognosis, it can predispose to distant metastasis, causing various symptomatic presentations. We present a unique case of large heterogeneous mass in the lung cavity arising from ULC, with complete absence pulmonary symptoms and concurrent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. A high degree clinical suspicion r...
A 72-year-old man presented with right-sided pleuritic chest pain, chronic cough and weight loss. Chest x ray revealed a moderate sized pleural effusion. Chest CT showed thromboem-bolism of the right main pulmonary artery, and pleural effusion with compression atelactasis of the right lower lobe of the lung (fig 1). As the thrombus appeared suspicious, being unilateral, central and occupying th...
An evaluation of amiodarone as prophylactic treatment for supraventricular tachyarrhythmias after pulmonary surgery was stopped because of a high incidence of the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) after a pneumonectomy. Retrospective analysis of all cases of resection for pulmonary neoplasm in our hospital between 1987 and 1991 indicates that amiodarone may be implicated in the develop...
Leiomyoma is a smooth muscle neoplasm that commonly occurs in the genitourinary system and the gastrointestinal tract of the body. Primary pulmonary leiomyoma is rarely reported in literature. We report a rare case of primary pulmonary leiomyoma of a 55-year-old male patient presenting with symptoms of cough for six months.
Pulmonary blastoma is a rare primary lung neoplasm, in that monophasic variety is far too rare. There are no specific clinical features seen for pulmonary blastoma; computed tomography and histopathology are diagnostic. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice; however, adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy may be required in large and aggressive tumors.
A case report of a patient with malignant renal neoplasm who underwent emergency pulmonary embolectomy during operation is presented. Knowledge of degree of venous extension, appropriate operative positioning of the patient and consideration of elective cardiopulmonary bypass are suggested ways to reduce morbidity and mortality from massive pulmonary emboli in these patients.
Angiosarcoma is a rare malignant vascular tumor. Pulmonary involvement is usually attributable to metastasis from other primary sites, primary pulmonary angiosarcoma therefore being quite uncommon. We report a case of angiosarcoma with pulmonary involvement, probably primary to the lung, which had gone untreated for more than two years. We describe this rare neoplasm and its growth, as well as ...
Malignant rhabdoid tumors (MRT) of the kidney are rare in children and even less common in adults, with only six previously reported adult cases. We present the case of a 60-year-old man with an MRT arising in the left kidney with extensive pulmonary micrometastases and thromboembolism resulting in thrombotic pulmonary microangiopathy (pulmonary tumor embolism syndrome). MRT is an extremely agg...
Pulmonary artery sarcoma is a rare malignant neoplasm that is often misdiagnosed and most often only recognized postmortem during the autopsy. We present the case of a male patient with a rapidly progressive pulmonary tumor who underwent urgent pneumonectomy for increasing symptoms of chest pain and septic clinical picture. Histological analysis revealed the diagnosis of a pulmonary artery sarc...
