We have grown high quality p-type δ-doped InAs quantum dots and have demonstrated coherent spin pumping and repumping of a hole spin in a positively charged quantum dot by means of a single-laser driving scheme under a high magnetic field in the Voigt configuration. Modeling of our system shows excellent qualitative agreement with the experimental findings and further explores the performance o...

LLE Review, Volume 71 137 Laser-diode pumping of solid-state laser materials is proving to be much more advantageous over the more conventional technique of flash-lamp pumping. The electrical to optical efficiency of laser diodes is significantly higher than for flash lamps. In addition, the emission wavelength of laser diodes can be chosen to couple efficiently to the absorption band of the la...

We present the results of the experimental study and comparison of Yb-free, Erdoped, all-fiber, alignment free, single frequency (SF) fiber amplifiers operating under 980-, 1470and 1530-nm pumping for the coreand clad-pumping architectures. In the single-mode core-pumped configuration Er-doped fiber amplifiers demonstrated 52% and 60% pump to output efficiencies for 980 and 1480 nm pump wavelen...

We demonstrate a new type of four-pass dye laser amplifier that can reduce the possibility of parasitic oscillation between optical components used in the amplifier. Pumping the amplifier with a 5.6-mJ Q-switched doubled Nd:YAG laser output, we obtain high-peak-power pulsed output of an incident cw narrow-bandwidth dye laser beam with a power gain greater than 2 x 10(6) . Subsequent amplificati...

This Letter reports on an optical pumping scheme, termed resonant pumping, for an erbium-doped distributed feedback (DFB) waveguide laser. The scheme uses two mirrors on either side of the DFB laser, forming a pump cavity that recirculates the unabsorbed pump light. Symmetric distributed Bragg reflectors are used as the mirrors and are designed by matching the external and internal quality fact...

In this paper, we report record nanosecond output energies of gain-switched Cr:ZnSe lasers pumped by Q-switched Cr:Tm:Ho:YAG (100 ns @ 2.096 μm) and Raman shifted Nd:YAG lasers (7 ns @ 1.906 μm). In these experiments we used Brewster cut Cr:ZnSe gain elements with a chromium concentration of 8x10 cm. Under Cr:Tm:Ho:YAG pumping, the first Cr:ZnSe laser demonstrated 3.1 mJ of output energy, 52% s...

We have developed and demonstrated both Ytterbium-doped and Erbium-doped, diode-pumped and seeded, fiber amplifiers at 1064 and 1570 nm, respectively. By pulse pumping a one-stage Erbium amplifier, we have shown greater than 20 W peak output power and high wall-plug efficiency. Our pulse-pumping approach improves energy efficiency up to 80% (at 1 kHz PRF) over the identical CW pumping scheme wh...

Air lasing refers to the remote optical pumping of the constituents of ambient air that results in a directional laserlike emission from the pumped region. Intense current investigations of this concept are motivated by the potential applications in remote atmospheric sensing. Different approaches to air lasing are being investigated, but, so far, only the approach based on dissociation and res...

The principle of laser action was first experimentally demonstrated in 1960 by T. Maiman (Maiman, 1960). This first system was a solid-state laser in which a ruby crystal and a flashlamp served as gain medium and pump source, respectively. Soon after this first laser experiment, it was realized that solid-state lasers are highly attractive sources for various scientific and industrial applicati...

We demonstrate and discuss a liquid pumping effect based on the interaction between periodically generated cavitation microbubbles and a millimeter diameter tube. The bubbles are generated by the heat of laser adsorption at the tip of an optical fiber immersed in liquid. When the bubbles are generated well away from the tube, a steady streaming flow with a relatively large and energetic ring vo...
