This paper presents the approaches and expectations of a recently launched course at New York University (NYU) in the design and development of musical controllers. The framework for the course, which is also entitled “New Interfaces for Musical Expression,” is largely based on the proceedings of the first NIME workshop held in Seattle, WA in April 2001.
We present Andante, a representation of music as animated characters walking along the piano keyboard that appear to play the physical keys with each step. Based on a view of music pedagogy that emphasizes expressive, full-body communication early in the learning process, Andante promotes an understanding of music rooted in the body, taking advantage of walking as one of the most fundamental hu...
Is there a distinction between New Interfaces for Musical Expression and New Interfaces for Controlling Sound? This article begins with a brief overview of expression in musical performance, and examines some of the characteristics of effective “expressive” computer music instruments. It becomes apparent that sophisticated musical expression requires not only a good control interface but also v...
This paper discusses the current state of knowledge on musical pattern discovery. Various studies propose computational methods to find repeated musical patterns. Our detailed review of these studies reveals important challenges in musical pattern discovery research: different methods have not yet been directly compared, and the influence of music representation and filtering on the results has...
1.0 overview it seems that grammar plays a crucial role in the area of second and foreign language learning and widely has been acknowledged in grammar research. in other words, teaching grammar is an issue which has attracted much attention to itself, and a lot of teachers argue about the existence of grammar in language teaching and learning. this issue will remind us a famous sentence f...
In this paper we give an overview of four algorithms that we have developed for pattern matching, pattern discovery and data compression in multidimensional datasets. We show that these algorithms can fruitfully be used for processing musical data. In particular, we show that our algorithms can discover instances of perceptually significant musical repetition that cannot be found using previous...
Biological diversity and species richness have been declined throughout the world as a result of human activities. Measuring species richness is important in rangeland conservation to evaluate the status and trends of native plant species, detecting non-native species invasion and monitoring rare species. However, heterogeneity in plant distribution makes inventories difficult. In this study tw...
In this paper we propose an algorithm that attempts to derive structure and repetition from a raw audio signal. For this purpose we examine the performance of different feature sets, i.e. energy and MFCCs.
We have developed a representation for musical rhythm and rhythmic structure based on concepts derived from African and African-American musics. Included in the representation are a model for expressive timing against an isochronous pulse, and a cellular approach to musical organization. In our implementation, the representation and its data structures are controlled and modified in real time u...
