OBJECTIVE Although seat belt use can significantly decrease the risk of injury, few car drivers make use of seat belts in Iran. The aim of this study was to test the utility and efficiencyof the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and the health beliefmodel (HBM) in predicting intention to use a seat belt among car drivers in Sabzevar, Iran. METHODS A cross-sectional, correlational design was em...
INTRODUCTION Trauma is a major cause of death and disability worldwide. A quarter of all fatalities due to injury occur due to road traffic crashes with 90% of the fatalities occurring in low- and medium-income countries. Poor compliance with the use of seat belts is a problem in many developing countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of seatbelt compliance in motor vehicles ...
We studied National Trauma Data Bank data to determine the effectiveness of car safety devices in reducing mortality and injury severity in 184,992 patients between 1988 and 2004. Safety device variables were seat belt used plus air bag deployed; only seat belt used; only air bag deployed; and, as explicitly coded, no device used. Overall mortality was 4.17%. Compared with the no-device group, ...
A test program was conducted to determine the effectiveness of a seat belt restraint in preventing occupant movement in a rollover accident. A baseline type-2 seat belt (pelvic and torso restraint), and an improved type-2 seat belt restraint, both designed to restrict occupant motion in a rollover accident, were tested in a rollover restraints tester (RRT). Each seat belt was placed on a H-III ...
INTRODUCTION Obesity has been shown to increase the risks of some types of injury in crashes. One way in which obesity may increase injury risk is by changing the routing of the belt relative to the underlying skeletal structures. METHODS Belt fit was measured in a laboratory study of 54 men and women, 48 percent of whom were obese, defined by body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m(2) or greater. T...
Although air bags have been reported to reduce passenger mortality in frontal collisions, they have also been reported as a cause of injury in motor vehicle collisions(MVCs). The purpose of this study was to evaluate a large cohort of patients involved in MVCs to determine mortality and the pattern of injuries associated with seat belt use and air bag deployment. Information on patients involve...
Previous studies have demonstrated that booster seats reduce the risk of seat belt syndrome, in particular the occurrence of abdominal organ injuries, by improving the fit of the seat belt on young children and encouraging better posture and compatibility with the vehicle seat itself. However, other researchers have shown that abdominal injuries are still prevalent even with the use of booster ...
Introduction: After heart diseases, traffic accidents are the main leading cause of mortality in the country. This is while seat belt use can significantly decrease the risk of mortality up to 41 to 50 percent. The rate of seat belt use among Iranian drivers is reported to be 3 to 56 percent. This study aimed to determine the predictive factors of seat belt use among drivers of Sabzevar based o...
The reduction in morbidity and mortality since the enforcement of seat-belt usage is well documented. Complications from the belt are also reported and the authors present anterior dislocation of the restrained shoulder, an injury not previously described. The mechanism of injury is explained and a change to the present standard of restraints is suggested.
