Rolling-based seismic isolation systems, in which rollers of circular or non-circular section are used, are less expensive and easier to manufacture. However, this type of isolation suffers from either lack of restoring or re-centering capability, or weakness against uplift forces. To resolve the first shortcoming the use of elliptical as well as pillow-shape rolling parts has been suggested, a...

This study compares the performance of two smart isolation systems that utilize superelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) for seismic protection of bridges using energy balance concepts. The first isolation system is a SMA/rubber-based isolation system (SRB-IS) and consists of a laminated rubber bearing that decouples the superstructure from the bridge piers and a SMA device that provides additio...

endurance time (et) method is a relatively new performance-based earthquake method for structural evaluation and design. in this method, the structure is subjected to a gradually intensifying accelorogram(s) and its performance is assessed based on the maximum time duration that it can meet the specified performance objectives. using moment-resisting and braced frames which are rehabilitated by...

This research reveals the efficiency of seismic isolation system in the form of rubber-metal supports with different height buildings at multi component seismic impact. As an example, seismically insulated monolithic reinforced concrete 5, 9 and 16 story buildings are considered. The solution of the problem is obtained by a direct integration of the motion equations for an explicit scheme in fi...

This paper reports on an investigation into how base isolation can produce benefits for the architectural design of hospitals. If a relatively new technology such as base isolation can be coupled with interdisciplinary collaboration from the birth of a project, it seems possible to achieve an improvement not only in their seismic, but also in their architectural design. The methodology adopted ...

Recent studies have highlighted the potential benefits of inelastic foundation response during seismic shaking. According to an emerging seismic design scheme, termed rocking isolation, the foundation is intentionally under-designed to promote rocking and limit the inertia transmitted to the structure. Such reversal of capacity design may improve the seismic performance, drastically increasing ...

A new device of reduction for seismic response using friction force was developed. In this paper, vibration analysis of a small base isolation system using the device was investigated by excitation experiment using artificial seismic waves. Peak acceleration amplitude on the base isolation system has decreased to 43 90% compared to input waves. And root mean square (RMS) amplitude has decreased...

The baseline design concept for a seismic isolation component of the proposed “Advanced LIGO” detector upgrade has been developed with proofof-principle experiments and with computer models. It consists of a two-stage in-vacuum active isolation platform that is supported by an external hydraulic actuation stage. Construction is underway for prototype testing of a full-scale preliminary design.
