Multichannel intraluminal impedance (MII) is a new technique for evaluation of bolus transport. We evaluated esophageal function using bolus transport time (BTT) and contraction wave velocity (CWV) of liquid, semisolid, and solid boluses. Ten healthy subjects underwent MII swallow evaluation with various boluses of sterile water (pH 5), applesauce, three different sized marshmallows, and iced a...

The maintenance of Leptospira species in liquid or semisolid medium is time-consuming and at risk of contamination due to the needs of routine subculture and dark field microscopy. Using Leptospira Vanaporn Wuthiekanun (LVW) agar, we maintained 100 pathogenic Leptospira isolates for 12 months without the need for subculture and confirmed the viability of all isolates by the naked eye.

The use of two semisolid media (semisolid Rappaport and semisolid Rappaport-Vassiliadis) for the isolation of Salmonella spp. from coastal waters was compared with the use of conventional media. Two hundred and fifty six samples were studied; Salmonella spp. were detected in 83. The semisolid media were the most sensitive, detecting 73 samples instead of the 53 detected by the conventional medi...

Comparison of the rates of motility through a semisolid medium of 16 common Salmonella sp., 14 Escherichia coli serotypes, 4 Arizona strains, 2 Escherichia freundii (Citrobacter) isolates, 2 Proteus sp., and 2 Pseudomonas sp. revealed the following. (i) Very closely related bacteria could demonstrate markedly different rates of progression. (ii) All of the salmonellae tested advanced faster tha...

The dynamics of a bolus transport through the esophagus are largely unexplored. To study this physiological process, we applied multiple intraluminal impedancometry in 10 healthy subjects. Three different protocols were used: 1) liquid bolus administered with subject supine, 2) liquid bolus with subject upright, or 3) semisolid bolus with subject supine. Transit of different parts of a bolus (b...

Semi-solid metal processing results in liquid segregation at the surface of the components. The pitting behavior of this surface layer of semi-solid metal processed alloy F357 was compared with the centre (or bulk) of cast plates in 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution. It is shown that pitting attack occurs preferentially in the eutectic regions at the interface between silicon particles and the alpha p...

The costly disposal of the semisolid residual pomace generated in the two phase extraction used in modern olive mills is causing serious problems to the small oil producers of rural southeastern Spain. Composting may be a viable alternative since complementary residues are usually available in these areas to prepare an adequate starting mixture. In this work, four different combinations of resi...

The aim of this study is to investigate experimentally the microstructural evolution of the joints using ledeburitic AISI D2 Tool Steel parts. The application of a new process of the semisolid joining of two parts of AISI D2 cold-work tool steel is proposed using a partial remelting method. Samples were heated in an argon atmosphere up to 1300°C and held for 10 minutes. Metallographic analyses ...

A heterotrophic semisolid medium was used with two sensitive assay methods, C(2)H(2) reduction and O(2)-dependent tritium uptake, to determine nitrogenase and hydrogenase activities, respectively. Organisms known to be positive for both activities showed hydrogenase activity in both the presence and absence of 1% C(2)H(2), and thus, it was possible to test a single culture for both activities. ...

Over the past 50 years there has been much effort invested in the investigation of the ecology of sea ice. Sea ice is an ephemeral feature of the Arctic and Southern Oceans and smaller water bodies such as the Baltic and Caspian Seas. The semisolid ice matrix provides a range of habitats in which a diverse range of microbial organisms thrive. In the past 5 years there has been considerable step...
