We present the procedure for designing a high speed and low power all-optical analog to digital converter (AO-ADC), by integrating InGaAsP semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) with InP based photonic crystal (PhC) drop filters. The self-phase modulation in the SOA can shift the frequency of the Gaussian input pulse. The two output PhC based drop filters are designed to appropriately code the f...
Ultrahigh-speed tuning of an extended-cavity semiconductor laser is demonstrated. The laser resonator comprises a unidirectional fiber-optic ring, a semiconductor optical amplifier as the gain medium, and a novel scanning filter based on a polygonal scanner. Variable tuning rates up to 1150 nm/ms (15.7-kHz repetition frequency) are demonstrated over a 70-nm wavelength span centered at 1.32 micr...
We report phase-conjugate feedback into a fluorozirconate optical fiber amplifier at infrared wavelengths. By using a semiconductor laser diode at 807 nm, a grating is established in photorefractive BaTiO(3) that, in the ring configuration, provides feedback into the amplifier necessary for laser action. Once written, the grating is self-sustaining, and lasing is observed even after the laser d...
Optical data extinction using ultra-long SOA is evaluated up to 56 Gb/s. The analysis of the deleterious effects such as spectral broadening and imperfect erasing predicts useful carrier wavelength reuse up to 20 Gb/s. Rate Equations for modeling dispersive nonlinearity in Fabry-Perot semiconductor optical amplifiers.
We model the non-linear gain characteristics of a Fabry-Perot semiconductor optical amplifier using a modified photon density rate equation. Good agreement is found with experimental results, with the simulation accurately reproducing all the major characteristics of the amplifier. To our knowledge, this is the first calculation using only the rate equations that accurately predicts the gain an...
We report experimental observations of optical bistability in a vertical-cavity semiconductor optical amplifier subject to an external pulsed input. Results show that the nonlinear transition exists with 1ns-duration pulsed input. © 2003 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (190.1450) Bistability; (200.4660) Optical logic
We experimentally demonstrate an all-optical binary counter composed of four semiconductor optical amplifier based all-optical switching gates. The time-of-flight optical circuit operates with bit-differential delays between the exclusive-OR gate used for modulo-2 binary addition and the AND gate used for binary carry detection. A movie of the counter operating in real time is presented.
in this paper first we try to analysis the behavior ofthe soas in the optical networks and then have proposed anumerical simple model to simulate the behavior of thesemiconductor optical amplifiers. after that by employing thismodel as inline amplifier for a dwdm optical system, we havesimulated the transmission of 10 channels with bit rate 10 gb/sup to distance 3970 km with rz-dpsk modulation ...
We have demonstrated, the first time to our knowledge, a low-input intensity high-contrast (10:1) optical AND gate based on the differential gain (optical bistability) observed in an 850 nm GaAs vertical-cavity semiconductor optical amplifier (VCSOA). The input switching power is about 6 lW, which equals to the intensity of 16 nW=lm. It is about 2 orders of magnitude lower than in in-plane semi...
