Among vertebrates, teleost fish exhibit a considerably wide range of sex determination patterns that may be influenced by extrinsic parameters. However even for model fish species like the zebrafish Danio rerio the precise mechanisms involved in primary sex determination have not been studied extensively. The zebrafish, a gonochoristic species, is lacking discernible sex chromosomes and the sex...

A simple discriminant function using midshaft femoral circumference for the determination of sex has been tested with 114 skeletons from the Libben Site, Ontario County, Ohio. The results have been shown to be 85% consistent with other, accepted means of determining sex. Femur circumference an be an aid to the sexual identification of poorly preserved and fragmentary skeletal remains.

The assignment of biological sex to archaeological human skeletons is a fundamental requirement for the reconstruction of the human past. It is conventionally and routinely performed on adults using metric analysis and morphological traits arising from postpubertal sexual dimorphism. A maximum accuracy of ∼95% is possible if both the cranium and os coxae are present and intact, but this is seld...

Although sex determination systems in animals are diverse, sex-determining genes have been identified only in mammals and some invertebrates. Recently, DMY (DM domain gene on the Y chromosome) has been found in the sex-determining region on the Y chromosome of the teleost medaka fish, Oryzias latipes. Functional and expression analyses of DMY show it to be the leading candidate for the male-det...

Salmonids are descended from a common ancestor that underwent an autotetraploidization event. After a whole genome duplication species could deal with sex determination by deleting one copy of SEX, the sex determining locus, or by recruiting a duplicated transcription factor to become a novel sex determining gene. It is not known which if any of these strategies salmonids adopted, but it appear...

7. 1. Summary Vertebrates have various sex determining mechanisms. These have been broadly classified as either genotypic sex determination (GSD) or environmental sex determination (ESD). This terminology, however, may obscure the fact that mixtures between genotypic and environmental sex determination exist, or that genotypic and environmental sex determination may, in fact, be the extremes of...

BACKGROUND Catfish has a male-heterogametic (XY) sex determination system, but genes involved in gonadogenesis, spermatogenesis, testicular determination, and sex determination are poorly understood. As a first step of understanding the transcriptome of the testis, here, we conducted RNA-Seq analysis using high throughput Illumina sequencing. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS A total of 269.6 mi...

In contrast to the rather stable regulatory regimes established over more that 100 million years in birds and mammals, sex determination in fish might frequently undergo evolutionary changes bringing the sex-determining cascade under new master sex regulators. This phenomenon, possibly associated with the emergence of new sex chromosomes from autosomes, would explain the frequent switching betw...

Introduction: Identification whether of living person or dead bodies have always been an uphill task for forensic experts. Traditional ways identification are used commonly due to limited resources and lack trained personals in the relevant field. becomes very important when victim assailant is unknown. To establish identification, methods finger prints, foot DNA technology. Lip prints a relati...

A number of dioecious species are grown across India and some of those plants play a crucial role in the agro-based economy of the country. The diagnosis of sex is very difficult in the dioecious plant prior flowering wherein sex identification at the seedling stage is of great importance to breeders as well as farmers for crop improvement or production purpose. A comprehensive approach of sex ...
