A combination of immunomagnetic separation (IMS) and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) procedure was used for direct isolation and identification of Shigella dysenteriae type 1 and Shigella flexneri from feces. Immunomagnetic particles were coated with monoclonal antibody MASFB, which is specific for a common epitope of the O polysaccharides of S. dysenteriae type 1 and S. flexneri. Bacteria bo...

Shigella dysenteriae type 1 causes devastating epidemics in developing countries with high case-fatality rates in all age-groups. The aim of the study was to compare host immune responses to epidemic (T2218) and endemic strains of S. dysenteriae type 1. Shigellacidal activity of serum from rabbits immunized with epidemic or endemic strains, S. dysenteriae type 1-infected patients, and healthy a...

A beta-lactamase with an M(r) of 29,000 and a pI of 7.6 was partially purified from a clinical isolate of Shigella dysenteriae. The bla gene encoded the SHV-11 enzyme carrying the substitution Leu-->Gln at position 35 and was linked to a strong promoter. This variant, unlike the prototype SHV-1 enzyme, hydrolyzed oxacillin, cloxacillin, and oxyiminocephalosporins such as cefotaxime.

We conducted serologic and biochemical studies on strains of three provisional Shigella serotypes. Included were 19 strains of serotype 3873-50 from three countries (1 from Mexico, 1 from Netherlands Antilles, and 17 from the United States), 13 strains of serotype 3341-55 from three countries (1 from Canada, 1 from Bulgaria, and 11 from the United States), and 19 strains of serotype 19809-73 fr...

We sequenced and analyzed Shigella dysenteriae strain Sd1617 serotype 1 that is widely used as model strain for vaccine design, trials and research. A combination of next-generation sequencing platforms and assembly yielded two contigs representing a chromosome size of 4.34 Mb and the large virulence plasmid of 177 kb. This genome sequence is compared with other Shigella genomes in order to und...

Bacillary dysentery caused by Shigella species is a public health problem in developing countries including Bangladesh. Although, shigellae-contaminated food and drinks are often the source of the epidemic's spread, the possible presence of the pathogen and transmission of it through environmental waters have not been adequately examined. We analyzed surface waters collected in Dhaka, Banglades...

Regulation of bacterial gene expression by small RNA (sRNA) molecules is an increasingly recognized phenomenon but one that is not yet fully understood. We show that the sRNA RyhB suppresses several virulence-associated phenotypes of Shigella dysenteriae, a causative agent of bacillary dysentery in humans. The virulence genes repressed by S. dysenteriae RyhB include those encoding the type III ...

The National Institute of Health of Japan, Tokyo (Received for publication, March 30, 1950) Evolutional steps of -nitrogen requirements of bacteria have been set up as follows. N2-N03-NH4-amino nitrogen-amino nitrogen+growth factor. Dysentery bacilli belong to the last step (3, 4, 6). As shown in the preceding report (5), Shigella dysenteriae (Shiga type) belongs to the transition zone between ...

To characterize Shigella clinical strains, we studied 82 Shigella strains recovered from 719 stool samples of patients with bloody diarrhea in Shiraz, Iran, over the period from April to October 2003. Serological assay classified the Shigella isolates as follows: 61 (74.39%) Shigella sonnei isolates, 16 (19.51%) Shigella flexneri isolates, 3 (3.65%) Shigella boydii isolates, and 2 (2.43%) Shige...

BACKGROUND Most communities in developing countries rely on traditional medicines for the treatment of diseases. In South Africa, the Limpopo province, within the Lebowakgomo district, uses tuberous roots of Kirkia wilmsii, after infusion in water for the treatment of a wide range of diseases by Sotho communities. MATERIALS AND METHODS The main objective of the study was to assess the anti-mi...
