background: radioactive yttrium glass microspheres are used for liver cancer treatment. these yttrium aluminum silicate microspheres are synthesized from yttrium, aluminum and silicone oxides by melting. there are two known processes used to transform irregular shaped glass particles into microspheres, these ‘spheroidization by flame’ and ‘spheroidization by gravitational fall in a tubular furn...

Bioactive glass ionomer cements (GICs), the reaction product of a fluoro-alumino-silicate glass and polyacrylic acid, have been in effective use in dentistry for over 40 years and more recently in orthopaedics and medical implantation. Their desirable properties have affirmed GIC's place in the medical materials community, yet are limited to non-load bearing applications due to the brittle natu...

Bioceramics are materials which include Alumina, Zirconia, Bioactive glass, Glass ceramics, Hydroxyapatite, resorbable Calcium phosphates, among others. They have been used in dentistry for filling up bony defects, root repair materials, apical fill materials, perforation sealing, as endodontic sealers and as aids in regeneration. They have certain advantages like biocompatibility, non toxicity...

Microparticles containing substantial amounts of radiocesium collected from the ground in Fukushima were investigated mainly by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray microanalysis with scanning TEM (STEM). Particles of around 2 μm in diameter are basically silicate glass containing Fe and Zn as transition metals, Cs, Rb and K as alkali ions, and Sn as substantial elements. These elem...

This study is focused on synthesis of nano-colloidal silica via alkaline water glass solution. Sodium ions of water glass were removed by cation exchanging in a resin column to obtain the silicic acid which was titrated to the solution of sodium silicate. Concentration of the colloidal silica and pH value of the solutions were controlled using different concentrations of alkaline sodium silicat...

We heated mixtures of sulfur and Na-bearing silicates in evacuated silica glass capsules to temperatures b tween 600øC and 950 ø C. At or above 850 ø C, Na-silicate glass reacts with elememal S to form a (Na, K) sulfide. Mobilization of this phase may account for the presence of Na and K on the surface of Io, and hence in the material sputtered into the Jovian magnetosphere.

In this work, the role of shock-wave (SW)-induced increase of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) in modulating the osteogenic properties of osteoblast-like cells seeded on a bioactive scaffold was investigated using gremlin as a BMP antagonist. Bone-like glass-ceramic scaffolds, based on a silicate experimental bioactive glass (CEL2) developed at the Politecnico di Torino, were produced by the ...

A decade ago, a new type of self-organization process was observed in the bulk of SiO2 glass after irradiation with ultrashort laser pulses [1]. Under certain irradiation conditions, highly ordered nanostructures with features smaller than 20 nm could be formed in the irradiated volume. The sub-wavelength arrangement of these structures results in form birefringence, which was recently exploite...

In this paper the MBS (Magnesium borosilicate) based glass-ceramic have been prepared and characterised to find its suitability in Low temperature cofired ceramics (LTCC) technology. The glass-ceramics were prepared by using conventional solid state route. The experimental study was conducted on the MBS glass-ceramic containing MAS (Magnesium Alumino-Silicate) based glass-ceramic as an additive...
