Grid dispersion is one of the criteria of validating the finite element method (FEM) in simulating acoustic or elastic wave propagation. The difficulty usually arisen when using this method for simulation of wave propagation problems, roots in the discontinuous field which causes the magnitude and the direction of the wave speed vector, to vary from one element to the adjacent one. To sol...
The immersed boundary (IB) method is a mathematical formulation for fluid-structure interaction problems, where immersed incompressible visco-elastic bodies or boundaries interact with an incompressible fluid. The original numerical scheme associated to the IB method requires a smoothed approximation of the Dirac delta distribution to link the moving Lagrangian domain with the fixed Eulerian on...

An algorithm for the generation of hexahedral element meshes is demonstrated. The algorithm starts by creating a structured grid in the interior of an object. Then the boundary region is meshed by means of an isomorphism technique that uses basically 2D-operations. Examples are given that demonstrate the quality of the algorithm.
An algebraic multigrid method with two levels is applied to the solution of the Helmholtz equation in a first order least squares formulation, discretized by Q1 finite elements with reduced integration. Smoothed plane waves in a fixed set of directions are used as coarse level basis functions. The method is used to investigate numerically the sensitivity of the scattering problem to a change of...
The co-volume integration method, Yee’s scheme, generalized to unstructured mesh is considered and compared with time domain finite element method (TDFE). In order to generate the meshes for which a good quality dual mesh is ensured, a new point placing method for the generation of meshes appropriate for the use of the co-volume method is proposed. Numerical examples are presented which demonst...
