abstract   background: while the benefits of computed tomography (ct) are well known in accurate diagnosis, those benefits are not risk free. ct is a device with higher patient dose in comparison with other conventional radiological procedures. is the reduction of exposures by requiring optimization of ct procedures [a principle concern in radiological protection]? in this study, the radiation ...

PURPOSE To evaluate scanning parameters (conventional versus spiral CT, section thickness, and pitch) and vessel orientation in the performance of CT angiography. METHODS Conventional CT and 1.0-, 1.5-, and 2.0-pitch spiral CT acquisitions of a carotid phantom designed with vessels oriented parallel to the z-axis, 45 degrees oblique, and perpendicular to the z-axis were obtained with section ...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Routine CT of the brain is traditionally performed with sequential CT. We assessed whether sequential CT can be replaced with thinly collimated multisection spiral CT without loss of image quality. MATERIALS AND METHODS An observer study was conducted using data from 23 patients who were scanned with both a sequential (collimation, 4 x 5 mm) and a spiral technique (coll...

BACKGROUND Much controversy exists as to the value of computed tomography (CT) in the preoperative staging of gastric cancer, because of its limited ability to identify correctly lymph node (LN) metastases, invasion of adjacent organs, or hepatic and peritoneal metastases. Spiral CT scanners have a number of potential advantages over conventional scanners, including the absence of respiratory m...

conclusions the automatic bolus-tracking method, results in higher contrast enhancement of the aorta and spleen at the portal phase, but has no effect on liver enhancement. however, bolus tracking is associated with reduced variability for liver enhancement among different patients. results forty-eight patients (23 male, 25 female, mean age=56.4±13.5 years) were included. the contrast enhanceme...

This study examined the application of 64-slice spiral double-low computed tomography (CT) to evaluate the degree of coronary artery stenosis. We examined 45 patients with coronary heart disease by 64-slice spiral double-low CT and coronary angiography (CAG) to determine CT accuracy in evaluating coronary artery stenosis. Imaging analysis from 64-slice spiral double-low CT identified 199 segmen...

BACKGROUND The purpose was the comparison of positron emission tomography using F-18-fluorodeoxy-glucose (FDG-PET) and spiral thoracic CT to detect pulmonary metastases from malignant primary osseous tumors. PATIENTS AND METHODS In 71 patients with histologically confirmed malignant primary bone tumors (32 osteosarcomas, 39 Ewing's sarcomas) 111 FDG-PET examinations were evaluated with regard...

Because of the interest in reducing the time and radiation required for screening sinuses with CT, we compared the quality of conventional coronal CT images with coronally reconstructed, axially acquired spiral CT images. The spiral reconstructions compared favorably with the conventional images and had significantly less motion and dental amalgam artifacts.

PURPOSE To evaluate the frequency of visualization, thickness and location of the normal appendix at non-enhanced spiral computed tomography (CT). MATERIALS AND METHODS Low-dose spiral CT scans obtained for renal colic assessment in 243 patients were retrospectively reviewed. The frequency of visualization, thickness and location of normal appendices were recorded without knowledge of the pat...
