One of the puzzling conditions encountered in the practice of pediatrics is the fairly well-defined syndrome known as cceliac disease. This condition was originally described in 1888 by Gee29 who formulated as the principal symptoms: distended abdomen, pronounced emaciation affecting the limbs more than the face, muscular atrophy, anemia, and a white diarrhea. Cheadle20 called the condition "ac...
Olmesartan sprue-like enteropathy is an adverse drug reaction that mimics the appearance of celiac disease and is related to the use of olmesartan. We present the case of a 71-year-old female with severe enteropathy attributed to celiac disease for 5 years that improved only after valsartan cessation. This is the first case associating valsartan with sprue-like enteropathy.
IT HAS BEEN BELIEVED that tropical sprue is caused by a primary folic acid deficiency,’2 although direct evidence in support of this concept is inadequate. While the administration of folic acid to patients with sprue in relapse will lead to clinical improvement, the remissions are often incomplete and malabsorption persists. Sprue may be conspicuously absent in the presence of gross vitamin an...
Faecal excretion of fatty acids is increased in patients with tropical sprue because of unabsorbed dietary fatty acids. The excretion of fatty acids correlates well with faecal wet weight. In vitro unsaturated fatty acids inhibited Na K-ATPase and Mg-ATPase isolated from basolateral membranes of enterocytes and colonocytes. These findings are a possible explanation for the observed abnormalitie...
SPRUE IS one of the most important diseases in the world. It probably disables thousands of adults each year, and it also occurs in children. With the recession of malaria, bowel diseases bulk bigger in tropical health. If money is available to pay for them, there are effective treatments for bacillary dysentery, amoebic dysentery, cholera, typhoid, and intestinal tuberculosis. Worm infestation...
According to the computerized ICD registration, 20 new cases of non-tropical sprue were detected in our outpatient clinic between 1979 and 1990. 8 of these patients had an oligo- or asymptomatic form of this disease (40%). The clinical presentation and spectrum of abnormal laboratory findings in these 8 cases are described in detail. It is concluded that laboratory parameters indicating malabso...
This study evaluated the sensitivity of an experimental model to mold temperature using a two-chamber casting machine and its recommended investment (Exp. 1), and the effect of sprue diameter and length using a one-chamber casting machine and its recommended investment (Exp. 2). Experimental patterns were cast from commercially pure titanium and percentage casting success obtained. Mold tempera...
