Steinernema scapterisci was more pathogenic to insects tested in the order Orthoptera than to those in the orders Lepidoptera or Hymenoptera; it was not pathogenic to earthworms. The nematode also infected and killed the mole crickets Scapteriscus acletus and S. vicinus when released four successive times at 10-day intervals in containers of soil infested with the nematode.

Steinernema carpocapsae Weiser All strain was compared to Steinernema riobravis Cabanillas, Poinar, and Raulston for control of the root weevil, Diaprepes abbreviatus (L.), in the laboratory and in potted citrus. In the laboratory bioassay, D. abbreviatus larvae were exposed to 30, 60, and 120 nematodes/cm(3) in sand. Insect mortality 1 week after application was greater (P </= 0.05) for S. rio...

The objective of this study was to determine the susceptibility of the two primary direct insect pests of hazelnuts in Oregon to three species of entomopathogenic nematodes. The entomopathogenic nematodes (Heterorhabditis marelatus Pt. Reyes, Steinernema carpocapsae All and Steinernema kraussei L137) were used in laboratory soil bioassays to determine their virulence against filbertworm, Cydia ...

In Slovenia only recently entomopathogenic nematodes were recorded for the first time. In the beginning of 2007, the presence of Steinernema affine was confirmed. During the further investigations in the same year Steinernema feltiae was recorded on the arable field near Cerknica. In the previous year this field was planted with chicory. In Slovenia, until now the entomopathogenic nematodes had...

We report the genome sequence of Xenorhabdus szentirmaii DSM16338 (4.84 Mb), a symbiont of the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema rarum. This strain produces antimicrobial activity.

Recently, the search for novel products derived from natural sources has become necessary due to decreasing effectiveness of current antibiotics in treating bacteria that are antibiotic-resistant. In this context, it is well known entomopathogenic (EPBs) produce a broad range secondary metabolites with antibacterial activities. Therefore, an in-vitro trial was conducted isolate and identify non...

The potential for entomopathogenic nematodes to control ßies in cattle feedlots was determined by screening 40 strains representing 8 species of Heterorhabditis Poinar and 5 species of Steinernema Travassos for virulence toward 3rd-instar house ßies (maggots), Musca domestica L. None of the 22 strains of Heterorhabditis infecting maggots caused signiÞcant levels of mortality in a Þlter paper as...

Animal-microbe symbioses are ubiquitous in nature and scientifically important in diverse areas, including ecology, medicine, and agriculture. Steinernema nematodes and Xenorhabdus bacteria compose an established, successful model system for investigating microbial pathogenesis and mutualism. The bacterium Xenorhabdus nematophila is a species-specific mutualist of insect-infecting Steinernema c...
