When designing a system in the behavioral level, one of the most important steps to be taken is verifying its functionality before it is released to the logic/PD design phase. One may consider behavioral models as oracles in industries to test against when the final chip is produced. In this work, we use branch coverage as a measure for the quality of verifying/testing behavioral models. Minimu...

MOTIVATION The standard paradigm for a classifier design is to obtain a sample of feature-label pairs and then to apply a classification rule to derive a classifier from the sample data. Typically in laboratory situations the sample size is limited by cost, time or availability of sample material. Thus, an investigator may wish to consider a sequential approach in which there is a sufficient nu...

Early stopping is a form of regularization based on choosing when to stop running an iterative algorithm. Focusing on non-parametric regression in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space, we analyze the early stopping strategy for a form of gradient-descent applied to the least-squares loss function. We propose a data-dependent stopping rule that does not involve hold-out or cross-validation data, a...

Group sequential stopping rules are often used during the conduct of clinical trials in order to attain more ethical treatment of patients and to better address efficiency concerns. Because the use of such stopping rules materially affects the frequentist operating characteristics of the hypothesis test, it is necessary to choose an appropriate stopping rule during the planning of the study. It...

We study the stability of the optimal stopping problem for a discrete-time Markov process on a general space state X. Revenue and cost functions are allowed to be unbounded. The stability (robustness) is understood in the sense that an unknown transition probability p(·|x), x ∈ X, is approximated by the known one p̃(·|x), x ∈ X, and the stopping rule τ̃∗, optimal for the process governed by p̃ is ...

Few if any obtain a measure of success in their chosen profession without the beneficent influence of others. The first author is no exception. His interest in optimal stopping problems was ignited as a student in 1965 when Professor Robbins was visiting the University of Minnesota. Perhaps a fitting way of expressing appreciation would be to use this occasion to introduce the second author, Xi...

A version of the Dynamical Systems Method for solving ill-posed nonlinear monotone operator equations is studied in this paper. A discrepancy principle is proposed and justified. A numerical experiment was carried out with the new stopping rule. Numerical experiments show that the proposed stopping rule is efficient.

When weighing evidence for a decision, individuals are continually faced with the choice of whether to gather more information or act on what has already been learned. The present experiment employed a self-paced category learning task and fMRI to examine the neural mechanisms underlying stopping of information search and how they contribute to choice accuracy. Participants learned to classify ...

This work compares the performance of all existing 2-CUSUM stopping rules used in the problem of sequential detection of a change in the drift of a Brownian motion in the case of two-sided alternatives. As a performance measure an extended Lorden criterion is used. According to this criterion the optimal stopping rule is an equalizer rule. This paper compares the performance of the modified dri...
