The functional organisation of the bovine rumen epithelium has been examined by electron and light microscopy combined with immunocytochemistry in order to define a transport model for this epithelium. Expression of connexin-43, an integral component of gap-junctions, the tight-junction molecules claudin-1 and ZO-1 and the catalytic α-subunit of the Na-K/ATPase were demonstrated by SDS/PAGE and...

INTRODUCTION Transdermal delivery has potential advantages over other routes of administration. It could reduce first-pass metabolism associated with oral delivery and is less painful than injections. However, the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum (SC), limits passive diffusion to small lipophilic molecules. Therefore, methods are needed to safely permeabilize the SC so that ioni...

The kinetics of ethanol transport from the blood to the skin surface are incompletely understood. We present a mathematical model to predict the transient exchange of ethanol across the skin while it is being absorbed from the gut and eliminated from the body. The model simulates the behavior of a commercial device that is used to estimate the blood alcohol concentration (BAC). During the elimi...

Peeling skin syndrome (PSS) is a very rare keratinization disorder, characterized by spontaneous exfoliation of the stratum corneum. Herein, we report a case of non-inflammatory (type A) PSS.

The acyl-CoA binding protein (ACBP) is a 10 kDa intracellular protein expressed in all eukaryotic species. Mice with targeted disruption of Acbp (ACBP(-/-) mice) are viable and fertile but present a visible skin and fur phenotype characterized by greasy fur and development of alopecia and scaling with age. Morphology and development of skin and appendages are normal in ACBP(-/-) mice; however, ...

Although the effects of long exposure (>>1s) to moderate temperatures (< or =100 degrees C) have been well characterized, recent studies suggest that shorter exposure (<1s) to higher temperatures (>100 degrees C) can dramatically increase skin permeability. Previous studies suggest that by keeping exposures short, thermal damage can be localized to the stratum corneum without damaging deeper ti...

Xerosis and hydration of the stratum corneum were evaluated in 60 hemodialyzed patients. Xerosis and a low capacitance of the stratum corneum were evidenced in more than 80% of the patients. Pruritus was present in two third of the subjects. We failed to disclose any significant relationship between severity of these three parameters.

The electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of alkyl spin labels were observed in the excised guinea pig dorsal skin, its stratum corneum, delipidized skin and stratum corneum model lipid liposomes. The spectrum of 5-doxylstearic acid (5-NS) in the stratum corneum and order parameter obtained from the spectrum, indicated that the spin label was present in highly ordered lipid lamella. On the othe...
