Through-thickness residual-stress profiles in rolled 7050-T74 aluminum plate were measured before and after stress relief by stretching (-Tx51). Measurement required adapting the crack compliance method to measure both inplane stress components. Unexpected features in the profiles could be explained by through-thickness yield strength variations caused by crystallographic texture.

The structures and stress of the Sb/Si~001! surface have been studied by a semiempirical tight-binding Green’s function method. The Sb/Si(001)231 surface is found to be under a tensile stress of 1.0 eV/(131 cell! along the dimer bond and a compressive stress of 21.1 eV/(131 cell! along the dimer row. Calculations of the surface stress for Sb/Si~001! (234), (235), and (236) reconstruction, which...

Communication is essential to members of a society not only for the expression of personal information, but also for the protection from environmental threats. Highly social mammals have a distinct characteristic: when conspecific animals are together, they show a better recovery from experiences of distress. This phenomenon, termed 'social buffering', has been found in rodents, birds, non-huma...

Aging is one of the most fundamental biological processes. It results in a decline in physiological function and an increased risk for pernicious diseases such as cancer. Oxidative stress has been proposed as a major cause of aging, but experimental tests of this hypothesis have been discouraging. Calorie restriction (CR) prevents age-related decline, but there are still gaps in our knowledge o...

We examined motives for adopting and maintaining yoga practice in a national survey of yoga practitioners (360 yoga students, 156 yoga teachers). Both students and teachers adopted yoga practice primarily for exercise and stress relief, but reported many other reasons, including flexibility, getting into shape, and depression/anxiety relief. Over 62 percent of students and 85 percent of teacher...
