Space weather research involves the study of the Sun and Earth from a systems viewpoint to improve the understanding and prediction of solar-terrestrial variability. There are a wide variety of solar-terrestrial imagery, spectroscopic measurements, and in situ space environmental data that can be exploited to improve our knowledge and understanding of the phenomena and processes involved in spa...

The gravitational lens of the Sun is an astrophysical phenomenon predicted by Einstein’s general theory of relativity. It implies that if we can send a probe along any radial direction away from the Sun up to the minimal distance of 550 AU and beyond, the Sun’s mass will act as a huge magnifying lens, letting us ‘‘see’’ detailed radio maps of whatever may lie on the other side of the Sun even a...

We report, here, on a project to port the Inferno operating system to the Sun SPOT sensor platform. The port provides support for the temperature and light sensors, the threeaxis accelerameter, LEDs, momentary contact switches, and GPIO pins. Communication among sensors is provided by an IPv6 implementation running over the integrated 802.15.4 radios.

One aspect of the relativistic space-time curvature due to the presence of mass is the breakdown of Euclidean (fiat-space) geometry. For example, the diameter of a spherical mass is greater than the result obtained by dividing the circumference by π. The objective of this article is to determine the amount of discrepancy between ”relativistic” and” non-relativistic” diameters for objects such a...

The cover of the NASA 1984 report "Probing the Depth of a Star: The Study of Solar Oscillations from Space" featured Hirschhorn's the Pomodoro Sphere. That report led to the helioseismic study of the global Sun. Pomodoro's Cube at Stanford symbolizes HMI data cubes for investigation of localized regions in the Sun.

We have before us a rather formidable task – we are in need of developing a predictive capability of the space environment of the solar system. Such a capability is required to protect our everincreasing assets in space, and to understand the influence of the Sun on Earth. Such a capability will be essential if we are to send humans forth on long-duration space flights. This is not a problem th...

The goals of space radiation health research are to understand qualitatively and quantitatively the ionizing radiations present in the space environment, identify qualitatively and quantitatively the risks associated with these radiations, and discover countermeasures to mitigate these risks. The articles that follow address each of these three components of space radiation health research. Thi...

Klarsicht/ANC-1/Syne/homology (KASH)/Sad-1/UNC-84 (SUN) protein pairs can act as connectors between cytoplasmic organelles and the nucleoskeleton. Caenorhabditis elegans ZYG-12 and SUN-1 are essential for centrosome-nucleus attachment. Although SUN-1 has a canonical SUN domain, ZYG-12 has a divergent KASH domain. Here, we establish that the ZYG-12 mini KASH domain is functional and, in combinat...
