This special issue on surface chemistry is introduced with a brief history of the field, a summary of the importance of surface chemistry in technological applications, a brief overview of some of the most important recent developments in this field, and a look forward to some of its most exciting future directions. This collection of invited articles is intended to provide a snapshot of curren...
Recent advances in the understanding of reactivity trends for chemistry at transition-metal surfaces have enabled in silico design of heterogeneous catalysts in a few cases. The current status of the field is discussed with an emphasis on the role of coupling theory and experiment and future challenges.
We employ density functional and quantum Monte Carlo calculations to show that significant changes occur in the gap of fully hydrogenated nanoclusters when the surface contains passivants other than hydrogen, in particular atomic oxygen. In the case of oxygen, the gap reduction computed as a function of the nanocluster size provides a consistent interpretation of several recent experiments. Fur...
Several experiments have been performed to probe the enantiospecific properties of chiral single crystal surfaces. The surfaces chosen have been the (643) planes of Ag and Cu, both face centered cubic structures. The chirality of these surfaces arises from the handedness of their kinked step structures. These structures are such that the (643) and the (643) surfaces are related by mirror symmet...
Although surfaces or, more precisely, the surface atomic and electronic structure, determine the way materials interact with their environment, the influence of surface chemistry on the bulk of the material is generally considered to be small. However, in the case of high surface area materials such as nanoporous solids, surface properties can start to dominate the overall material behavior. Th...
The review discusses how CO 2 surface chemistry has developed since the early 1950s. Emphasis is given to studies of well-characterized surfaces of metals, oxides and some more complex systems involving in particular alkali modified surfaces and also of coadsorbed molecules.
It was shown by Loeb (1) that an approximate correspondence exists between the isoelectric points of gelatin or of egg albumin when in solution or adsorbed on the surfaces of microscopic particles. It remained for Abramson (2) to demonstrate a quantitative agreement between his own results for the electric mobility of serum albumin adsorbed on quartz surfaces and measured by the microscopic met...
