A brief survey is given of the thermochemistry of a number of silicon-containing substances that are of interest in modern technology. Among those discussed are: silicalite (SiO2), silicon disulfide (SiS2), the crystalline and vitreous forms of silicon diselenide (SiSen), silicon sesquitelluride (Si2Te3), silicon nitride (Si3N4), and vanadium disilicide (VSi2).
We report a fundamental change in the understanding of iron oxide thermochemistry, opening a facile, new CO(2)-free route to iron production. The resultant process can eliminate a major global source of greenhouse gas emission, producing the staple iron in molten media at high rate and low electrolysis energy.
Most free radicals are transient species and it is therefore difficult to measure their thermochemical properties. We have used two new techniques that address this problem. Photoacoustic calorimetry was used to measureheats of formation of free radicals and thus homolytic bond strengths, while photomodulated voltammetry was used to measure their oxidation and reduction potentials. The data off...
The correlation consistent Composite Approach (ccCA), which has been shown to achieve chemical accuracy (+/-1 kcal mol-1) for a large benchmark set of main group and s-block metal compounds, is used to compute enthalpies of formation for a set of 17 3d transition metal species. The training set includes a variety of metals, ligands, and bonding types. Using the correlation consistent basis sets...
