The nucleotide sequence of 5S rRNA from an extreme thermophile Thermusthermophilus HB8 has been re-examined and determined as [Formula: see text] The present study could resolve previously ambiguous residues and find two additional residues (G(8 3), C(9 7)), G at position 89 and two terminal heterogeneities which are exactly the same as reported with Thermusaquaticus 5S rRNA.Images

We describe a high-pressure reactor system suitable for simultaneous hyperbaric and hydrostatic pressurization of bacterial cultures at elevated temperatures. For the deep-sea thermophile ES4, the growth rate at 500 atm (1 atm = 101.29 kPa) and 95 degrees C under hydrostatic pressure was ca. three times the growth rate under hyperbaric pressure and ca. 40% higher than the growth rate at 35 atm.

Microorganisms with the capability to desulfurize petroleum are in high demand with escalating restrictions currently placed on fuel purity. Thermophilic desulfurizers are particularly valuable in high-temperature industrial applications. We report the whole-genome sequences of Paenibacillus napthalenovorans 32O-Y and Paenibacillus sp. 32O-W, which can and cannot, respectively, metabolize diben...

We identify and describe the distribution of temperature-dependent specific growth rates for life on Earth, which we term the biokinetic spectrum for temperature. The spectrum has the potential to provide for more robust modeling in thermal ecology since any conclusions derived from it will be based on observed data rather than using theoretical assumptions. It may also provide constraints for ...

Carboxydothermus spp. are some of the most studied carbon monoxide-oxidizing anaerobic thermophiles. For further investigation into the carbon monoxide metabolism of Carboxydothermus spp., we report here the draft genome sequences of the hydrogenogenic carboxydotrophs Carboxydothermus pertinax (2.47 Mb; G+C content, 40.7%) and C. islandicus (2.39 Mb; G+C content, 42.0%).

In this study, a hydrolysate diffusion and utilization model was developed to examine factors influencing cellulolytic biofilm morphology. Model simulations using Caldicellulosiruptor obsidiansis revealed that the cellulolytic biofilm needs to generate more hydrolysate than it consumes to establish a higher than bulk solution intra-biofilm substrate concentration to support its growth. This pro...

Based on the differences in their optimal growth temperatures microorganisms can be classified into psychrophiles, mesophiles, thermophiles, and hyperthermophiles. Proteins from hyperthermophiles generally exhibit greater stability than those from other organisms. In this review, we collect data about the stability and folding of monomeric proteins from hyperthermophilies with reversible unfold...

This investigation constitutes a comparative study of the ribonucleic acid production during the course of growth at different temperatures of an obligate thermophile and a mesophile. A study of this nature aside from the quantitative data should provide information concerning the rate of ribonucleic acid production, the characteristic ribonucleic acid patterns obtained during the course of gro...

Many archaea colonize extreme environments. They include hyperthermophiles, sulfur-metabolizing thermophiles, extreme halophiles and methanogens. Because extremophilic microorganisms have unusual properties, they are a potentially valuable resource in the development of novel biotechnological processes. Despite extensive research, however, there are few existing industrial applications of eithe...

On the basis of the temperature range in which growth can occur, bacteria are usually divided into 3 groups, namely: thermophiles, mesophiles, and psychrophiles (sometimes called cryophiles or rhigophiles). Thermophiles have temperature optima (generally quite close to temperature maxima) 10 to 25 degrees above the temperature optima of mesophiles. Thermophiles and mesophiles are easily disting...
