We used 5 diagnostic tests in a cross-sectional investigation of the prevalence of Trypanosoma cruzi in Tejupilco municipality, State of Mexico, Mexico. Our findings showed a substantial prevalence of immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgM antibodies to T. cruzi in human (n = 293, IgG 2.05%, IgM 5.5%, both 7.1%) and dog (n = 114, IgG 15.8%, IgM 11.4%, both 21%) populations. We also found antibodies to ...

phytochemical investigation of a dichloromethane-methanol (1:1) extract of the fruit pericarp of omphalocarpum procerum which exhibited antiplasmodial activity during preliminary screening led to the isolation of the new fatty ester triterpenoid 3β-hexadecanoyloxy-28-hydroxyolean-12-en-11-one (1), together with five known compounds 2-6. the structure of the new compound as well as those of the ...

Donor infection status should be considered when accepting an organ for transplant. Here we present a case of Chagas disease developing after a lung transplant where the donor was known to be Trypanosoma cruzi antibody positive. The recipient developed acute Trypanosoma cruzi infection with reactivation after treatment. Chagas disease-positive donors are likely to be encountered in the United S...

In trypanosomatids, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), the first enzyme of the pentosephosphate pathway, is essential for the defense of the parasite against oxidative stress. Trypanosoma brucei, Trypanosoma cruzi, and Leishmania mexicana G6PDHs have been characterized. The parasites' G6PDHs contain a unique 37 amino acid long N-terminal extension that in T. cruzi seems to regulate the ...

Four-day-old epimastigote culture forms of Trypanosoma cruzi, Trypanosoma rangeli and Trypanosoma conorhini were tested with 21 lectins. Furthermore T. conorhini was incubated with the following sera: rat, Wistar HAN, germ free; normal fresh hen, rat and human serum. T. rangeli was agglutinated only by the D-mannose specific lectins from Canavalia ensiformis and Pisum sativum. T. cruzi and T. c...

We report a case of cerebral meningoencephalitis due to Trypanosoma cruzi in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. The patient presented with seizures and focal neurological signs. Definitive diagnosis of chagasic meningoencephalitis was made by demonstration of free trypomastigote forms in the cerebrospinal fluid. Benznidazol was prescribed with clinical and neurological improveme...

Both acute and chronic phases of Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) infection are characterized by tissue inflammation, mainly in the heart. A key step in the inflammatory process is the transmigration of inflammatory cells across the endothelium to underlying infected tissues. We observed increased arachidonic acid release and platelet-activating factor (PAF) production in human coronary artery endo...

Aim: We report the synthesis and biological evaluation of a small library 15 functionalized 3-styryl-2-pyrazolines pyrazoles, derived from curcuminoids, as trypanosomicidal agents. Methods & results: The compounds were prepared via cyclization reaction between corresponding curcuminoids appropriate hydrazines. All derivatives synthesized investigated for their activities. Compounds 4a 4e sh...

Contemporary understandings of the epidemiology of Chagas disease as well as it’s clinical features, together with knowledge of the insect vectors and genotypes of the causal agent Trypanosoma cruzi are important pieces of information for comparisons with cases in the past. Evidence indicates that 4,000 years ago in northern Chile cases displaying digestive symptoms or ‘megacolon’ were frequent...

Chagas' disease caused by Trypanosoma cruzi is an opportunistic infection in the setting of HIV/AIDS. Some individuals with HIV and chronic T. cruzi infection may experience a reactivation, which is most commonly manifested by meningoencephalitis. A reactivation myocarditis is the second most common manifestation. These presentations may be difficult to distinguish from toxoplasmosis in individ...
