Fourier-transform-limited extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) radiation (bandwidth approximately < 300 MHz) tunable around 91 nm is produced by use of two-photon resonance-enhanced four-wave mixing on the Kr resonance at 94 093 cm(-1). Noncollinear phase matching ensures the generation of an XUV sum frequency 2 omega1 + omega2 that can be filtered from auxiliary laser beams and harmonics by an adjustable...

We describe electric-field poling of fine-pitch ferroelectric domain gratings in lithium tantalate and characterization of nonlinear-optical properties by single-pass quasi-phase-matched second-harmonic generation (QPM SHG). With a 7.5-microm-period grating, the observed effective nonlinear coefficient for first-order QPM SHG of 532-nm radiation is 9 pm/V, whereas for a grating with a 2.625-mic...

We adapted and tested a laboratory quantitative filter pad method and field-based microcosm method for estimating diffuse attenuation coefficients (K(d)) of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) for a wide range of stream optical environments (K(d320) = 3-44 m(-1)). Logistical difficulties of direct measurements of UVR attenuation have inhibited widespread monitoring of this important parameter in stream...

We report the use of a new extreme-ultraviolet radiation source based on spontaneous anti-Stokes scattering for high-resolution absorption spectroscopy of transitions originating from the 3p(6) shell of potassium. The region from 546.6 to 536.8 A is scanned at a resolution of about 1.2 cm(-1). Within this region, four previously unreported lines are observed.

The formation of fatty acid esters of vitamin D3 was demonstrated in rat skin exposed to artificial ultraviolet rays by using multi-dimensional high-performance liquid chromatography, ultraviolet spectrophotometry, and gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. This result indicated that the fatty acid esters of 7-dehydrocholesterol in rat skin (at least 80% of 7-dehydrocholesterol in rat ski...

Aquatic ecosystems are a key component of the Earth's biosphere. A large number of studies document substantial impact of solar UV radiation on individual species, yet considerable uncertainty remains with respect to assessing impacts on ecosystems. Several studies indicate that the impact of increased UV radiation appears relatively low when considering overall ecosystem response, while, in co...

We present a defect-free lithography method for printing periodic features with nanoscale resolution using coherent extreme ultraviolet light. This technique is based on the self-imaging effect known as the Talbot effect, which is produced when coherent light is diffracted by a periodic mask. We present a numerical simulation and an experimental verification of the method with a compact extreme...

Two-dimensional quantitative images of the density of chlorine in a supersonic expansion are produced with an absolute accuracy of 5% in 150-microm pixels by using optical absorption tomography. An incoherent arc-lamp source provides ample ultraviolet radiation for high-resolution optical absorption tomographic measurements. A measurement of the chlorine absorption coefficient is reported.
