Every time function on spacetime gives a (continuous) total preordering of the spacetime events which respects the notion of causal precedence. The problem of the existence of a (semi-)time function on spacetime and the problem of recovering the causal structure starting from the set of time functions are studied. It is pointed out that these problems have an analog in the field of microeconomi...

Virtually every “serious” place where professional astronomy is done has a librarian, even if shared with the physics or math department. Since its creation in 1994 of Departamento de Astronomı́a (DA) of Universidad de Guanajuato (UG) it was neither provided with a librarian, nor with proper space for its holdings, nor with a budget allowing institutional journal subscriptions. I describe my exp...

Results on soft and hard diffraction obtained by the CDF Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron p̄p Collider are reviewed with emphasis on aspects of the data that point to the underlying QCD mechanism for diffraction. The results are interpreted in terms of a phenomenological approach in which diffraction is due to an exchange of low-x partons subject to color constraints.

This paper proposes two revisions to the Lexical Mapping Theory as part of UG and accounts for dative shift and the interaction between dative shift and passive in Chinese and English. The overall strategy is to maximize the universality of the Lexical Mapping Theory by allowing only morpholexical operations to be language-specific.

In this squib, I present an alternative view of the Gen and Eval mechanisms that lie at the heart of Optimality Theory (“OT”) (see Prince and Smolensky 1993, McCarthy and Prince 1993). As originally conceived, Gen is a pattern generator which creates an infinite set of possible phonological realizations of a lexical input string (“candidates”). Eval then evaluates the entire (infinite) set to d...
