The soil fungus Cladophialophora sp. strain T1 (= ATCC MYA-2335) was capable of growth on a model water-soluble fraction of gasoline that contained all six BTEX components (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and the xylene isomers). Benzene was not metabolized, but the alkylated benzenes (toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes) were degraded by a combination of assimilation and cometabolism. Toluene a...

m-Xylene transformation has been studied on as-prepared H-Y and a series of dealuminated Y zeolite catalysts. The conversion of m-xylene was found to increase initially with acidity, however, decreases subsequently. It has been proposed that the high concentration of acid sites in the H-Y catalyst increases paring reaction, in addition to the well-known isomerization and disproportionation path...

A series of m-xylene/NOx experiments were conducted in the new Bourns College of Engineering-Center for Environmental Research and Technology dual 90 m3 indoor smog chamber to elucidate the role of NOx on the secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation potential of m-xylene. The results presented herein demonstrate a clear dependence of m-xylene SOA formation potential on NOx, particularly at atm...

Xylene, an aromatic hydrocarbon is widely used in industry and medical laboratory as a solvent. It is a flammable liquid that requires utmost care during its usage. On exposure the vapours are rapidly absorbed through the lungs and the slowly through the skin. Prolonged exposure to xylene leads to significant amount of solvent accumulation in the adipose and muscle tissue. This article reviews ...

The isomers of xylene have been separated by enclathration using three host compounds: 9,9'-bianthryl (H1), 9,9'-spirobifluorene (H2) and trans-2,3-dibenzoylspiro[cyclopropane-1,9-fluorene] (H3). The structures of each host with a single xylene isomer have been elucidated and, for H1, the relative lattice energies of the clathrates with ortho- and para-xylene have been evaluated.

background aromatic organic solvents are extensively used in various industries. xylene is a colorless, transparent liquid, with the characteristic odor of the aromatic hydrocarbons family, which is widely used in industries. adsorption is a conventional method of purifying polluted air containing volatile organic compounds (vocs). zeolite has many unique properties such as high capacity, molec...

The crystal structures of the Werner clathrates Ni(NCS)2(isoquinoline)4 (H) with para-xylene (px), meta-xylene (mx) and ortho-xylene (ox) have been elucidated. The kinetics of thermal decomposition of the three inclusion compounds were performed using the isothermal technique of Flynn and Wall. Selectivity of H for the xylene isomers was determined for both the liquid and vapour phase binary mi...

Toxicity of xylene in lung, thymus, liver and skin has been reported [3,4]. The nephrotoxicity of xylene has not been well documented. Cortical tubular epithelial cells are a vulnerable site of organic solv...
