During the wild boars hunting season (2012-2013), 6508 adults were shot in Lazio Region, Viterbo territory. Out of the 6508, 393 subjects were sampled to be tested for the detection of Salmonella spp., Yersinia enterocolitica, E. coli VTEC and Trichinella spp. For this purpose, diaphragm and skeletal muscles samples were collected after the shooting, and tested at the Istituto Zooprofilattico S...

The antigenic type strains for Yersinia enterocolitica antigens O:1 to O:34 were examined and their antigenic relationships with the type strains of Escherichia coli, Shigella spp., and Salmonella spp. were determined. Y. enterocolitica O:5,27 was antigenically identical to E. coli O97 and Y. enterocolitica O:11 was antigenically identical to E. coli O98.

The sweeping conclusion of Kachoris et al. (3) that routine culturing of stool specimens for Yersinia enterocolitica is not a cost-effective procedure concerns us. We wish to recommend that the word procedure be followed by "from our patient population in Boston, Mass." The authors mentioned the variability of isolation rates reported by three groups of investigators and referred to Weissfeld's...

A previous study has shown that YopB of Yersinia spp. is essential for translocation of Yop effectors across the eucaryotic plasma membrane (M.-P. Sory and G. R. Cornelis, Mol. Microbiol. 14:583--594, 1994). However, this role was recently challenged (V. T. Lee and O. Schneewind, Mol. Microbiol. 31:1619--1629, 1999). Using protease protection and digitonin extraction, we reconfirm that YopB of ...

The bacterium Xenorhabdus nematophila is an insect pathogen and an obligate symbiont of the nematode Steinernema carpocapsae. X. nematophila makes a biofilm that adheres to the head of the model nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, a capability X. nematophila shares with the biofilms made by Yersinia pestis and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis. As in Yersinia spp., the X. nematophila biofilm requires a ...

Yersinia spp. is currently an antibiotic resistance concern and a re-emerging disease. The essential virulence factor Yersinia protein kinase A (YpkA) contains a Ser/Thr kinase domain whose activity modulates pathogenicity. Here, we present an approach integrating a machine learning method, homology modeling, and multiple conformational high-throughput docking for the discovery of YpkA inhibito...

Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, a Gram-positive intracellular pathogen, is the etiological agent of caseous lymphadenitis or CLA. This bacterium infects goats and sheep and causes great economic losses worldwide annually, mainly for goat producers. Despite its importance, CLA is still poorly characterized. However, with advances in the genomic field, many C. pseudotuberculosis genes have al...

Yersinia enterocolitica is a foodborne pathogen, but the importance of water as a route of exposure for human infection is not well known. Y. enterocolitica isolation methods were developed primarily for food and clinical samples, and may not be effective for use with environmental samples. The objective of this study was to assess the recovery of Y. enterocolitica from surface water used for d...
