We propose an explanation for the recently observed powerful contained explosion in a Z pinch experiment performed at Sandia National Laboratories. Our arguments are based on the assumption that a pure SU(2) Yang-Mills theory of scale ∼ 0.5MeV is responsible for the emergence of the electron and its neutrino.

Z-pinch effects in a laser produced aluminium plasma were investigated with a relatively low current fast coaxial electrical discharge. The ion flux in the laser produced plasma (LPP) was monitored with a Langmuir ion probe and the line density was controlled by using an aperture to select the portion of the LPP which enters the discharge cell. The Zpinch dynamics were recorded using time-resol...

The ZaP Flow Z-pinch experiment at the University of Washington investigates the innovative plasma confinement concept of using sheared flows to stabilize an otherwise unstable configuration. The stabilizing effect of a sheared axial flow on the m = 1 kink instability in Z-pinches has been studied using linearized, ideal MHD theory to reveal that a sheared axial flow stabilizes the kink mode wh...

Z-pinch is a useful device for efficient energy injection to the plasma. High-temperature and high-density plasmas can be produced easily in the implosion process by self-magnetic field. Because the radiation from z-pinch plasma lie in various wavelength region, the application to pulsed and intense light source such as Extreme Ultra Violet (EUV) light for the next generation semiconductor lith...

The initiation of the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership includes nuclear-based transmutation devices to recycle the spent fuel. Fusion can offer an alternative to the use of fast reactors for the transmutation of actinides. At a modest fusion power of 20 MW, a Z-Pinch driven sub-critical blanket can burn actinides and produce power. Several engineering issues have been examined: the effect of t...

There are presently four driver technologies that are being developed for IFE Power Plants: these are HIF (Heavy Ion Fusion), KrF (Krypton Fluoride laser), DPSSL (Diode-Pumped Solid-State Laser), and Z-Pinches. All four types were included in the discussions at the Snowmass Fusion Summer Study in 1999 [1]. The purpose of this paper is to discuss (1) the z-pinch power plant concept, and (2) the ...

1. PRELIMINARY EXPERIMENTS WITH A FAST Z-PINCH CAPACITOR DISCHARGE: THE GENERATION OF HIGH PRESSURES IN SOLIDS Preliminary experiments are being carried out to study the application of a fast capacitor Z-pinch discharge to the generation of high magnetic fields, dense vaporized metal plasmas, and high pressures. These experiments bear on aspects of the relatively well-known exploding wire techn...
